Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
WSIA is a rotational internship that provides interns with both a carrier experience and a brokerage experience within the surplus lines insurance industry. I was one of 20 interns chosen from across the country and was placed at Chubb in Alpharetta, GA for five weeks and Burns & Wilcox in Chicago, IL for four weeks. At Chubb, I primarily worked to assist underwriters in the environmental department in quoting renewals. While at Burns & Wilcox I shadowed and assisted underwriters in four different lines of business, including commercial lines, professional lines, personal lines, and property.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
Each WSIA intern is provided with a mentor to assist them both during and after the internship experience. My mentor lived in Alpharetta, GA, which is where I was placed for the first half of my internship. We had bi-weekly phone calls and met up for lunch a couple times while I was in GA. He gave me a lot of great insight and advice throughout my internship, and he was also a huge help following my internship when it came time to consider full time employment after I graduate in the Spring of 2020.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Absolutely - I would even say I was one of the most prepared interns due to the classes I've taken at Temple. Even though I learned so much doing hands-on work, I had already at least touched on a lot of what I covered during my internships in Professor McCloskey's P/C class and Professor Wilkins' contracts class.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I applied to the internship online in September, had an in-person interview at Temple in October, and was told I got the internship in early November by email. The application includes two short essays and a recommendation letter.
Were you assigned any special projects?
Yes. At Chubb I was given a list of accounts and was in charge of doing renewal quotes. By the end of my five weeks, I had completed over 100 renewal quotes. I was also in charge of sending the quotes out to brokers and answering any questions they had about the quotes. At Burns & Wilcox, I worked on policy reviews and logging submissions.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
WSIA covers housing and transportation costs. This includes rent, flight tickets to and from host cities and orientation in Kansas City, MO, and a rental car if you aren't placed in a city with easily accessible public transpiration. The internship coordinator also finds housing for all of the interns, so I wasn't in charge of searching for housing in a city that I had never even been to. There were also many lunches, happy hours, and fun events after work that I attended throughout my nine week internship.
Describe the company's internship program.
The WSIA program is truly outstanding and I would recommend it to anyone even remotely interested in the surplus lines/specialty insurance industry, or for anyone who isn't quite sure if they'd rather work on the carrier side or the brokerage side of insurance. I was able to experience two very different companies, live and work in two entirely different cities, and learn so much about the industry as a whole. I felt very comfortable in both offices to ask questions or ask for more work. I was placed in a Staybridge Suites in Alpharetta, GA and a beautiful studio apartment in Chicago - both very convenient and a short commute to my offices.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes, but even better than I expected. I had only heard amazing things about the WSIA internship program and enjoyed every moment of my summer. I loved the work I did, had a great time experiencing two new cities, and I now have a large network of other interns and professionals around the country. I couldn't have asked for more!

Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I was selected as one of the 18 students nationwide to participate in the WSIA (formerly NAPSLO) internship program for the summer of 2018. During my time as an intern, I've had the opportunity to work with a global leading insurance carrier Sompo International (formerly Endurance) in New York, NY for five weeks and with one of the top three US wholesale brokerage firms CRC Insurance Services (a subsidiary of BB&T bank) in Dallas, TX for four weeks.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor Mr. Dan Confalone from Markel called me every week to check in my internship progress. We also met up a couple times to discuss a lot of stuff. He’s a very personable and supportive mentor that I enjoy having conversations with. I’ve learned a lot about the industry and his career path from him.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, definitely. I always had my notes from my RMI classes pulled up on my screen at work. They are very helpful! Especially my contracts class helped a lot with understanding policies at my internship.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I found out about this opportunity through my peer mentor at gamma. Then I looked more into it online and applied ahead. The application includes an essay and a recommendation letter. I had an in person interview with Mr. Gerald Dupre from WSIA internship Committee. It’s an one on one hour interview. I heard back the decision 2 weeks after that. It was pretty quick.
Were you assigned any special projects?
Yes. I was shadowing different underwriters and brokers within different departments on both side. So I participated on a lot of renewal accounts and new business. On the carrier side i mostly assisted underwriters with industry researching and loss run analysis. On the broker side, I learned a lot about submission and finding coverages for our clients by attending the meeting with underwriters and agencies.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
My housing and transportation were all covered by WSIA. That was one of the best parts of my internship! It let me focus on my internship more rather than worry about my housing and spending situation. A lot of happy hours and lunches on both sides.
Describe the company's internship program.
WSIA actually did a lot for us. The working environment on both sides were amazing. My managers and coworkers really did care about me and did give me some authorities to handling stuff. Everyone were very nice and made me feel welcomed! The housing was great. I had both extremely nice single apartment in New York and Dallas at very convenient location.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes. I only heard great things about WSIA and I was so excited that I was being selected. It was the best summer ever. I made so many great friends through WSIA and I appreciate it so much.
