Introduction to Actuarial Science

What is Actuarial Science?

Actuarial science is a profession that applies math, statistics, and data analytics to quantify the costs of risk and uncertainty and make business decisions.  Actuaries primarily work in quantitative business roles related to risk management, insurance, consulting, analytics, and finance.

Why should you consider studying actuarial science?

Actuarial science is a credentialed profession, like the CPA in accounting and CFA in finance.  The education and examination process helps actuaries develop and learn throughout their career, increase their salary as they pass exams, and is one of the reasons it has been a top-ranked job.  Furthermore, actuaries have job security and stability during periods of economic hardship, as more firms need to risk expertise in times of high risk.

What differentiates actuarial science from statistics/data analytics?

A statistics and data analytics major focuses more on the general organization and interpretation of data as well as the theoretical proof components.  Actuarial science packages the application of those skills along with business knowledge, finance and risk concepts, and professional development, to help you succeed within a profession.

At Temple, actuarial science students are actively involved in our Gamma Iota Sigma student professional organization, which provides tremendous professional and career development opportunities for students.

We run our own career receptions, so students gain both the support of CSPD and the department during job placement, resulting in strong job placement rates.
