Actuarial Science
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
During the first week I had many reading assignments to understand how actuaries work in Saudi, in terms of what the internal Actuaries do and what appointed actuaries do. I also had to learn how SAMA – the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority- regulates the actuarial work. Then I started working on three specific projects.
Did you have a mentor?
No
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I did.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
The interview was casual and more of a meeting. I met with the HR manager first then the internal actuary where we discussed the duration and the structure of the internship program.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Yes. I worked on three different projects, one of them was about studying the time frame between issuing a policy to reporting an accident. I wrote a report after each project, and I presented my work to the other actuaries and risk managers.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
None
Describe the company's internship program.
Although most of my work was actuarial, I also worked with the risk management team which taught me more about the insurance industry in Saudi Arabia. We also had breakfast together every Thursday, which was a great networking opportunity.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
I had a week off to study for my exam.
