Risk Management and Insurance with a Management Information Systems minor
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
Assisted in insurance marketing activities to Subaru dealers around the country. Calculated ocean marine damages each quarter. Entered claims data into online database. Filed insurance contracts.
Did you have a mentor?
No
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, in particular RMI 3504 helped me understand the language of the insurance documents I would look at on a regular basis.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
One interview an hour and a half long on site. I talked to an HR representative followed by three employees from the Risk Management department. I was contacted about a week later with an offer and accepted.
Were you assigned any special projects?
The CFO tasked me with digitizing important documents for an audit and creating a comprehensive spreadsheet that highlighted expenditures.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
The HR department hired an excellent speaker that spoke to all interns about how to transition from life in college to life in the work place. The presentation was about three hours long and I gained valuable knowledge. I also went on a company lunch.
Describe the company's internship program.
The Risk Department is small so while Subaru is a larger company, it really felt like working at a smaller company at the same time. All co-workers were great and I really felt welcome there the entire time. The work load was very manageable in the summer but became more challenging during the school year. The work load during the school year was not overbearing, however, and actually taught me valuable time management skills.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes, they gave me a good idea of what I was going to do during the interviewing/hiring process. Much of the work is Excel based which they were clear about during the interview.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
During the summer I needed to miss about three days total due to various reasons and my manager was accommodating. During the school year, I was expected to work around 15-20 hours per week which equated to two full days and one part time day. There were some weeks where I was busy with school and was allowed to take some time off to study and work on projects.
