This past summer Kate interned at Buck Consultants in New York. The adjustment wasn’t too bad, and the subway system was easy to navigate. Her day consisted of arriving to work around 8:30am, chatting with co workers and checking email until 9:00am. Next, she worked on any projects that her mentor had assigned to her with other employees. Kate also attended lunches where she learned more about consulting. Unfortunately, the Actuarial Science classes did not cover how to do benefit calculations and investment consulting which she needed to know for her job.
This internship was what she expected after the interview process. She went through one in office interview with four people (one hire up and three associates), where they took her out to lunch after the interview. Some special project she worked on included calculating 50 retirement calculations, as well as analyzing and researching different investment clients and their funds and entering that information into a spread sheet. Some additional benefits included paid housing, lunches and learns, Buck Consultants University classes (with lunch), and finally the sand volleyball and softball activities. Kate enjoyed the location of the office, which was only a block and a half from her apartment, the people she worked with, and the sport activities after wards, as well as the challenging and interesting work she was given. She would not change anything about her experience and would definitely recommend Buck Consultants to other students!
