This past summer Luba interned in Small Group Underwriting at CIGNA in the life, disability, and accident department. For most of the summer she worked on analyzing a large excel data file, and then creating an automated report in excel summarizing her findings. At the end of her internship, she was able to use some of CIGNA’s underwriting systems and rate basic life plans, which was very interesting. She also worked with underwriters, and helping them process censuses through the census manipulator. Her mentor was her manager, and she also worked closely with the other interns there. The RMI classes, especially 3501, greatly helped her in understanding the basic terminology and concepts of her daily work.
The internship was what she expected after the interview. The process itself consisted of one phone interview, and one in person interview, which both were done very fast. At the end of the summer, her manager took out all the interns to a nice lunch, also CIGNA provided different social opportunities such as an ice cream social and a community service event. She liked that she was given the responsibility of completing a project, and having the freedom to be creative. She also really enjoyed working closely with the other three interns. The challenging part was learning Excel from scratch, and learning how to do basic VBA coding, but now she can use that knowledge in her future career there. She would definitely recommend CIGNA to all other future candidates.
