Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I worked a claims examiner in Prudential's Waiver of Premium Department. My project for the summer was to look at over 400 claims to determine whether they were questionable and should be reexamined. I looked over medical records, called physician offices, and consulted Prudential's onsite vocational and medical experts for help.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor helped me with professional development and how to manage a productive work-life balance.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, a lot of the terminology I learned in RMI 3501 & 3502 was used in my department. My coworkers were impressed how much I already knew coming into the role.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
All of the interns met at the headquarters in Newark, NJ three times throughout the summer. All meals, travel, and other expenses incurred were reimbursed.
Describe the company's internship program.
The environment at my office was very laid-back. We could wear jeans everyday. Workload was reasonable, taking breaks was encouraged. Not much outside work activities other than traveling to Newark.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes, 4th of July

Role
Actuarial Intern - Group Disability Forecasting
Location
Roseland, New Jersey
Please list your major(s) and minor(s).
Actuarial Science
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I worked directly with the manager to set disability assumptions and forecast the liabilities for Prudential’s Group Disability business. Additionally, I created Quarterly Actual vs. Forecast report containing tabular and graphical analysis of bottom line components and the assumptions that drive them to be distributed to stakeholders of the forecast. Finally, I completed annual 2Q model assumptions updates and calculated short term disability loss development factors
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor met with me once every two weeks approximately, and in these meetings she gave me advice about the internship program, full time rotational program, any questions I had about actuarial exams or the profession, and any other questions I might have had about the company or the summer experience in general.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
My AS and RMI classes definitely helped prepare me for my internship. While working in the Group Insurance space, my manager began to explain many insurance topics to me including captives, loss triangles, and incurred but not reported reserves to name a few. Already having prior knowledge from my classes helped me understand these topics at a deeper level and perform my job better, often saving time because my manager did not need to explain these topics.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
My main project this summer on the Group Disability Forecasting Team was revising and improving the quarterly actual vs. expected report, comparing our forecasted numbers for the quarter vs. what the numbers actually were. My reported provided in depth analysis of our forecast model components and the drivers of changes in these model components, carving out the model assumptions that effected the bottom line components for the business within the quarter.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Internship Lunches, Housing, Top Golf social event, Company Happy Hours, Chief Actuary Lunch, Community Service Events, Coffee Chats with a C Suite Executive
Describe the company's internship program
Prudential's Actuarial Internship Program provided me with real life actuarial experience that made me feel like I was another actuarial associate within the program, not just an intern. I was assigned my one large project, the actual vs. expected report, in addition to several smaller ad hoc projects throughout the summer. Prudential has an extremely welcoming and collaborative atmosphere, all of the employees were willing to help me out with any questions I had and assist in any way possible throughout the summer. I also had the pleasure of playing on the Group Insurance softball team, providing me an experience to connect with my coworkers in an out of office atmosphere in addition to meeting employees from all the other business units within the company.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
The internship was what I expected after going through the interview and hiring process. Before going into the program, Prudential explained the culture and the level of work to be expected, which ended up being exactly what I expected. Additionally, the internship program gave me a lot of exposure to current ALDP associates, an experience I was told I would have, that actually far exceeded my expectations. The networking experiences over the summer were incredible and ample, allowing me to meet many associates from entry level all the way up to C suite executives within the company.
