Please list your major(s) and minor(s).
Actuarial Science
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
Assisted client support managers with creating solutions with our licensed software for current client projects. Became very familiar with using Poly software and software testing. Drafted software delivery documentation for client software instruction and information.
Did you have a mentor?
No
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Not much since this was a software company, I used some actuarial knowledge for some proof of concept work but mostly familiarized with the software.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Met the hiring managers at a committee meeting luncheon, then had an on campus interview, then an interview in their office with the client managers and the VP of Advanced Modeling.
Were you assigned any special projects?
I had two big projects. One was was a proof of concept comparing two methods (month by month vs. iterative) for asset liability management and determining if each produced the same asset portfolio yield. This project was used in helping a client decision of choosing which software to use and help them become familiar with Poly's method versus a competitors method.
The other project was creating a test workbook that automated a policy fund value calculation with a new type of liability premium waiver the client was implementing. This was used in calculating the reserves for this client's new policy liability. What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
A few lunches
Describe the company's internship program.
This summer was the first time this office had interns, so there was not much of a set program. The company atmosphere was tightly knit in a small office of 8 employees which was good for asking everyone questions. The work load was a bit sporadic since our primary function is consulting, but the work itself was challenging, engaging, and used for client solutions.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
For the most part. After visiting the office for my second interview, that gave me a pretty good idea of what the people and office were like.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes, I was able to take a week off. They are pretty flexible with internship length and days off as I had a 14 week internship and others in their Chicago office had 6-10.
