Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
Provide a general description of the internship. (Daily Tasks Completed, Standard Work Hours, etc.)*: I had a few big projects that I worked on over the course of the summer as well as doing some ad hoc tasks as they were needed. The majority of my work during the internship revolved around the acquisition that happened between Phoenix and Nassau Re. I worked on writing vba code to streamline the process of analyzing AG43 stat reserve results, updating the tax workbooks to figure out the Q2 tax reserves and modifying the workbook to account for the reinsurance treaty that came with the Nassau Re acquisition of Pheonix.
Did you have a mentor?
No
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
N/A
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I felt that because at Temple the AS major is in the business school, and specifically the Risk Management and Insurance department, I was a step ahead of the other interns who were coming from just a math background. I already knew insurance terms, reserving, and excel skills that were being used everyday where other interns had to ask a lot of questions and learn things on the spot.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I had a first round interview with Rochelle at the intern reception. She then met with me the following day for a second interview. Those were the only two interviews I had and within the next few weeks, Rochelle called me to extend an offer for a summer 2016 internship.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I was able to head the intern project for the summer where the 8 interns had to organize a week long fundraiser to benefit Foodshare. We did a week of game shows where we had employees sign up to play and pledge on teams they thought would win. We played Jeopardy, Family Feud, and chopped challenge to successfully raise about $1000. We also did a can drive and collected over 30 pounds of canned food.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
They providing housing as well as an employee day trip one weekend to Lake Compounce
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
There were a total of 8 actuarial interns at Phoenix. Each one of us had a manager whom we reported to. They also had 3 intern ambassadors who were in charge of scheduling all our events and were available for answering any questions or concerns we had. They scheduled various activities for us throughout the summer. We had about four workshops in which we met with full time employees who taught us about the company and had Q&A time for us to get some of our questions answered as well. They also had other activities such as a night at the movies, and an adventure room trip where we got to network with the full time employees as well as other interns from Phoenix. We had a philanthropic project where we had to do a week long fundraiser to raise money for Foodshare, a local not for profit. We organized a week-long game show event and can drive where we raised about $1000 for foodshare and grew our leadership skills immensely. The intern ambassadors took us on a trip to the Phoenix Albany location to see what they do there and learn about how all the different departments work together, as well as networking with employees.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
If we had a reason we needed to miss work, they were very understanding in letting up miss a day or two, but they did not provide paid days off.
If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
The HR department at Phoenix was very helpful when it came to adjusting to a new city. They provided us with a calendar of events for the summer, gave us pamphlets and fliers for local places and kept us very updated on move in and housing information for the summer.
