I was assigned some projects for my department that included a cyber claims analysis and examining new business accounts. A lot of time was spent working on the group project that was presented to the office of the CEO where we had to pitch a new product idea.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
He gave me some projects to do and answered any questions I had about the company
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Slightly but I couldn't really understand what goes into the underwriting process from my classes so I was able to learn that here
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
The group project that all the interns are assigned is the biggest portion of this internship and a lot of time is spent on it
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
None

Really depends on your department! Don't be afraid to ask the people interviewing you what projects you will be working on because that will make a big difference in how your summer goes.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Not really lol
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes! They were extremely flexible when I had emergencies come up and really understanding

RMI, minor in Finance
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I worked as an intern in the Customer Service Department at Philadelphia Insurance Companies in their Bala Cynwyd office. More specifically, I worked with direct billing. Along with the two projects I was assigned over the summer, I also worked with notifying insureds about returned checks, reinstatements of policies, and processing/issuing refunds for collector vehicle accounts.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
Her desk was located right near mine so she was always there whenever I had questions about the work I was doing.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Simple interview process - interviewed at career fair, then had second interview the week after spring break and got the offer a couple days later.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Yes, I had two projects to work on during the summer. The first was a project within my department where I had to come up with ideas for process improvements and ways to reduce touchpoints to ultimately enhance customer experience, where I had to present that to the heads of the department. The second was a group project with 7 other individuals, most of which were located in other field offices. We were tasked with coming up with a new product that Philadelphia Insurance Companies should offer, and advocate for why it would be a right fit, how it could be profitable, etc., which was presented to the Office of the CEO.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Bagel day on the last Friday of every month, and I also had the opportunity to attend ISOP's NextGen Intern Forum in Philadelphia. Describe the company's internship program (atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.). Philadelphia Insurance Companies has a very robust internship program. It begins with a very detailed orientation, and throughout the 10-week program we regularly had meetings regarding department overviews, presentation skills, etc. The work load was very manageable. There are times where you may feel as if you have too little or too much work, but communicating with your mentor/manager is the most important thing.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Other than holidays, no. But, we had flex time on Friday's, where we were allowed to leave at 4.

Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I reviewed the documentation including account summaries for accounts on the file to justify the accounts underwritten for an internal audit, as well as updated account summaries on renewed account. I also ordered and reviewed the loss control reports on several accounts to find any major discrepancies between how the risk was presented and what the inspection revealed, as well as updated the underwriter on each account with any recommendations/concerns for each account.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I shadowed my mentor for a couple accounts that she was underwriting or renewing. She assigned me work as well as instructed me on how to perform the job. She helped me understand what a day-to-day job as an underwriter looks like as well as the qualities and skills needed for the job.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I applied through PHLY's website, had a phone interview and then talked to them at the intern reception. Later, I was called for an in person interview where I told them about my interests and a couple weeks later I was offered a position. Were you assigned any special projects?
We were assigned a group project where we researched and analyzed a product that fits PHLY's risk appetite and could potentially insure. We were split into six groups as the project was a competition as well. At the end of our internship we did our final presentations it to the Office of the CEO. After watching all the great presentations, the OCEO decided for our team to be the winners for this project.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Great work life balance, free gym, internship lunches, paid hours for volunteer activities Describe the company's internship program (atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.). The workload was not too heavy as they also give us the group project which is very time consuming. Everyone in the company is very friendly and welcoming which makes the work environment very free and relaxing. The project deadlines are not set in stone, my manager was very flexible about the deadlines. They try their best to make this a great experience for interns in terms of gaining industry knowledge as well as having fun.

Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I completed daily account managing tasks such as reassigning business for the underwriting team, pulling loss reports and updating renewal files for underwriting review. I conducted research to identify non-profit and for-profit clients of Philadelphia Insurance Companies from a sample of over 100 different refugee centers within the US. I reviewed over 1000 insurance policies to ensure that appropriate exclusion forms were included and identified policies to be corrected for management. I also participated in multiple team meetings for the Human Services department where I learned about upcoming projects, internal issues and how to resolve them, and expectations for the upcoming month.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
She gave me daily tasks to complete and always made sure that I felt completely comfortable coming to her with any questions or concerns that I had. She also let me shadow her on a lot of the daily work she did so that I could get a feel for what it's like being an underwriter at PHLY.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes
Were you assigned any special projects?
I introduced a new product to the Office of the CEO in which I spent 9 weeks working on a project with 5 fellow interns where we researched the organic farming industry and its potential to be a new product offering for Philadelphia Insurance.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Internship lunches, access to company box seats at various sporting events.
Describe the company's internship program.
I think that everyone in the Bala Cynwyd office made all of the interns feel like we could approach them with any questions or concerns that we had. Everyone in my department and on my floor took the time to get to know me and know more about my personal life as well as the different projects that I was working on throughout my summer. The work load was average. There were times when I was overwhelmed with how much I had to get done sometimes but the deadlines for assignments weren't set in stone so it was easy to be flexible with what I wanted to get done.

Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
The usual work day would begin at 8:30AM and I would usually check in with my manager for any needed work/help. I would assist the underwriters by issuing and mailing their policies to the agents, PHLY does a great job of making sure that they are issued within a week so being on top of this is crucial. I have worked on several projects for my manager from completing 50-100 loss ratio exception reports for each account to organizing endorsement references.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
He helped immensely throughout my internship as well as my part-time position throughout this fall semester. For every question I had, whether it was how to quote a policy or even how to set automatic replies for when I am not in the office, he was there every single step of the way.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Definitely! My managers were actually quite impressed when I knew the definitions of the terms they were referring to. It saved them time and also elevated my overall impression.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
The interview/hiring process was fairly simple, they want to see someone that is a well-rounded person. PHLY wants to hire an individual that has a friendly, likeable personality because the company in general is an outgoing, engaging, and community friendly organization. I came to the home office for an in person interview after meeting with the recruiter at the intern reception. The interview was an hour and a half long, which consisted of 30 minute interviews with a manager of each underwriting department.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
At the beginning of the internship we were told that we had to come up with a product that PHLY has not yet but would potentially insure and market/present it to the executive board. I must say this was the most intimidating yet most educational project I have ever done. My group learned every aspect of what incorporating a new product consists of from the potential claims, marketing efforts, underwriting guidelines to how we should present ourselves in front of the CEO.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
We have a bagel day on the last Friday of every month, healthy picnics to encourage healthy behavior, marathons and triathlons, and a beautiful gym right next door for free!
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The atmosphere was so lively and uplifting. All the summer associates got along so well, we really became long term friends after this internship. We were given excel, WebEx, and presentation skills training. PHLY is huge on community service, I was one of the two captains for our fundraising efforts to raise $5,000 for an organization called Cradles to Crayons. We held bake sales, 50/50 raffles, and a Jeans Week for the whole company and raised $5,000 in total! Work load was a good amount, although, towards the end it got a bit stressful because of our final group presentation that took up a lot of our time.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
I did not request any time off, but I know there were many other interns that took days/weeks off because of a vacation. PHLY is big on a work/life balance, they want you to enjoy every part of your summer.

Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
Work was 40 hours a week and I started at 8:30-5:00 PM with one-hour lunch break. I reviewed new business submissions to determine eligibility and released quotes once my quote was reviewed and approved by an underwriter. I worked with agents and brokers directly to clarify on coverage, underwriting decisions, and submission eligibility. I processed re-quotes and midterm changes (MTC). I pulled loss runs, violation reports, built underwriting reports, specific building rates, TIV (total insured value), and ITV (insurance to value) for day care renewals. I assisted in determining renewal premium, rates, and deductibles, for high loss accounts (LRERS). I worked on policy issuance. I worked on reassigning accounts to appropriate underwriters.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
The guy that sat next to me, he was an Underwriter 1. My manager was not around much due to being busy and working from home a lot. So my mentor was kind of the one who gave me all my work and made sure I was busy. I would still report to my manager for days off and things of that nature but my mentor was more of the one who showed me around. He taught me how to do basically everything I know now and how to navigate through all the programs that PHLY uses.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
I would say yes. It did in the aspect that my Industry terminology was a lot higher then the rest of my peers. I think my multitasking skills and time management skills were better due to how the RMI classes are ran.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I went to Industry to Campus event night before Internship reception. I then interviewed with the recruiting director at our internship reception the next day. I then received an email that I had two interviews at their office a couple weeks after the internship reception. I then had one more phone interview a couple days following my onsite interviews. The Hiring Director called me an hour to two hours after my last phone interview and took the job.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Yes, there were specific things my manager assigned me to see if I could handle such as reviewing app submissions to see if we should insure or not. Then I would sit with an underwriter to see if my decisions were correct or not. This was something no one else was doing as well as being in contact with agents outside of PHLY. The other would be we all had an internship project with groups. This was to see if we could handle multitasking, time management, teamwork, etc.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
There weren't any company wide Happy Hours but some departments had them. We did have a kick ball team that would meet at a bar on Tuesdays then go play after work. Once a month we had department lunches so we would get free lunch. The last Friday of the month was bagel Fridays that was free as well. We were given an hour for lunch so I used that time to study or workout if I wanted.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
Atmosphere was very laid back and chill. No ones micro managing you or over your shoulder while working. We had three days of orientation, then once a week we did sessions to learn about HR, Claims, Risk Department, etc. There were shadowing sessions available to sit with someone in a department you were curious about. Also were Web-seminars (WebEx) to learn about Excel and things of that nature if you were interested. They also had something called TMNA U that teaches you about the programs you would be using in your own department.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Holidays, but other then that we could receive time off, we just needed to let our manager or HR know before hand.
