Everybody at Nassau Re was very helpful and happy to explain how to preform tasks if you got stuck. The work load was very reasonable and everyone who worked there was incredibly friendly. Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I worked in the valuation department to improve the end-of-year process by streamlining it and creating more efficiency with the annual statements. I did this by creating new workbooks to automatically populate specific exhibits using formulas and VBA macros. I also participated in educational sessions, networking luncheons, and community service events throughout the program. The internship ended with a presentation in front of the other interns and actuaries from all the other departments about my experience throughout the summer.
Did you have a mentor?
I didn't have a formal mentor, but I worked closely with my manager. She gave me a lot of freedom during the internship by allowing me to build, design, and format the workbooks on my own. She was very helpful in teaching me the insurance and policy knowledge I would need to complete my projects, without having the need to constantly come back to her to be told specifically what to do.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
My Actuarial Science classes, as well as the Gamma meetings, helped prepare me for my internship by teaching me the basics of the insurance industry in order to have a broad understanding of the work I did this summer. Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
At the screening interview at the company table in the career reception, I was asked to come back for a second round the next day. About a week later, I was contacted by HR to complete the online application for the internship. Shortly after, I received the offer by phone call.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Other than the annual statement projects, I was involved in the annual intern-run fundraising campaign for Foodshare, in which I was in charge of consolidating and recording all the donations we received from each event. I was also the lead of a team of interns to prepare an interview-skills session to present in front of the other interns.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
I received housing and parking for relocating to Hartford. Actuarial managers would also take us out to eat during the networking lunches or other events.
Describe the company's internship program.
The internship program was a very positive and valuable experience overall. The culture was a very impressive and collaborative environment with easy access to approachable executives. We had several fun after-work activities and intern events, such as an escape room, Painting with a Twist, happy hours, trivia nights, a scavenger hunt, and a fitness week.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Through the Industry to Campus presentation, brochures from the career reception table, and conversations during my interviews, the internship was very much what I expected. There was very little aspects about the program that I wasn't already prepared for or aware of.

Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I had one main project that I worked on over the summer that involved streamlining the valuation process. It was a group project, but everybody had their own line of business to work on.
Did you have a mentor?
No
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I felt that the AS classes and Gamma meetings at Temple helped me have a good grasp on insurance terms. I was at least aware of terms that were discussed at work.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
The interns raised money for Foodshare by selling snacks to employees for a week. We were able to decide what time was best to sell them, and what items to offer.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
They provided housing in walking distance to work.
Describe the company's internship program.
Nassau Re is a smaller company, so everybody is very approachable and you end up knowing most of the actuaries there. Over the summer, there were ten interns, and everybody had one manager that would meet frequently with you to discuss progress on your project and if you had any questions. There were also two intern ambassadors if we had any issues. There were happy hours and trivia that many employees would go to, and they would put the interns on different teams so we could network with more people we otherwise may not interact with.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
It was not paid time off, but they were very understanding if you needed to take a day out of work.
