Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I was given a set of tasks and assignments each day from my manager and members of my team. I assisted in the claims adjusting process and learned how to use and navigate through two online claim systems. I completed the CLI and CENS training programs, essentially learning how handle and adjust auto claims.
Did you have a mentor?
No
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I recognized the majority of the terminology that was used in the office.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Internship fair, second round interview on campus, third round interview in Marlton Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe. I was the first intern to complete the CLI and CENS training programs. This was great experience for me because I was surrounded by new full-time hires and was taught the entire claims adjusting process. This process included receiving claims, analyzing photos, pricing injuries from the accident, and learning to negotiate with attorneys. It was a great experience.
Describe the company's internship program.
Everybody in the office was friendly, welcoming, and supportive. I was never overwhelmed with work, and had no problem asking for more when I finished my assignments.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
This was my first claims internship so I did not know what to expect. However, the training and skills I learned at Liberty have been applicable to my other internships.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
No

Yes, they prepared me for some of the math and general concepts. I had not taken upper level classes however, so I cannot completely answer this question.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
The interview was pretty straight forward. They flew us into Boston and put us in a hotel. We were split up and interviewed individually with 3 different actuaries. They gave us case studies where we numbered what answers we thought were right for the given situation and talked through our answers.
Were you assigned any special projects?
No, I was not.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Relocation payment, intern lunches, happy hours, and an intern outing.
Describe the company's internship program.
The work load was not too much. It was a pretty stress free environment where we stuck to only working 37.5 hours per week. The work was real company work however and the training helped with basic company knowledge.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
It was what I expected after going through the interview/hiring process.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes, we had 1.5 paid days off per month. If you didn't use them, then you got the money at the end of the internship.

Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
I usually got into work around 7:30 or 8:00 am (but could've gotten in as late as 9:00 am) and stayed 8 hours with a 30 minute lunch break. I had my own cube which was located near many other summer interns so I got to meet a lot of people. I had frequent meetings with my manager where I could ask her any questions I had an update her not he projects I worked on. My work consisted of projects done for my team as well as work completed for trainings and weekly ARC lead debriefs.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My buddy and buddy group acted as my mentor(s). We had a few lunches and coffee breaks together and I was able to ask her any questions I had about the program or company or her job and projects.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, they exposed me to some of the terminology I was hearing and products I was working with as well as some of the calculations I did. It also gave me a solid excel base to use in my internship.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I talked briefly with a recruiter at the career reception. I then had a phone interview a week or so later and flew up to Boston to have an on campus interview halloween weekend. I had a week after I got an offer to make a decision.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I worked on two major projects that exposed me to opposite side of the reserving department. The first worked with statutory reserving, reinsurance and variable annuity products. The second project worked with GAAP reserves, shock assumptions and term life products.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
I was given a relocation housing stipend to pay for housing for the summer. We also got to volunteer for a day, take a department outing, go to events for the buddies and students during the work day, go on a duck tour, networking dinners and happy hours.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
It was very large with about 30 actuarial interns and about 200 interns total in Boston with more at other offices. We had specific actuarial trainings where we also met students in the company's full time program and could network with them. We also had a speaker series, ARC lead (the actuarial program leads) debriefs and various other organized activities such as volunteering and a duck tour of the city. The office was more professional (never allowed to wear jeans) and they have a very structured training, intern, and rotational program
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
I was given 1.5 days a month of flexible time off. If I didn't use it I was paid for it.
If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
Relocating was easy in Boston. The city is a lot like Philadelphia and the public transportation system was easy to use and get used to. I didn't have any trouble at all.

Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
Created SAS queries to determine profitability of partnerships, determine profitable and unprofitable characteristics of partnerships, prepared profit and quota shares. No standard hours, just 37.5 hours a week, 7.5 per day with a half hour lunch break
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
They were there for questions, should I have any. They provided a little bit of information on their background and path to becoming an actuary.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, they prepared me well. It made many of the trainings rather redundant and kinda pointless.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
It was a two stage interview process. The first was a phone interview that lasted approximately 45 minutes. The other was an on site interview that lasted from 9 am to 2 pm, where I talked to three people for 40 minutes each, then had lunch with the two people that had escorted me between these three interviews.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
My project was to build an analytics query in SAS that would pull information of loss ratios, premium and loss dollar difference. An additional query was created to determine characteristics of vehicles that were more likely to appear in profitable partnerships than unprofitable ones
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
There were several lunches with my team, my department and sometimes my buddy group (mentorship group
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
It was a very open atmosphere where questions were more than welcome. There were trainings that occurred on a biweekly basis focusing on all aspects of the insurance business (ratemaking, reserving, excel, CAT, etc.). The workload for most interns is one major project, which is manageable
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
