Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
My primary responsibility was to review renewal policies before they were sent to the carrier and client. This involved comparing the new policy to the review documents which listed all of the necessary provisions requested by the client. If something was missing, or if something should not have been present, I would make a note of it so the account managers could contact the carrier. I also completed this process for insurance quotes, before they became policies. Quote reviews were slightly more difficult because they did not contain all of the necessary information. Other odd jobs I completed included reviewing lists of named insureds and helping to create rating worksheets for workers' compensation accounts.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I had many opportunities to sit in with my mentor during work hours. during this time, I would observe the work he did while he explained in- depth what he was doing, and the importance of it. I had the opportunity to learn about ratings for different policies, renewal strategies, and dealing with carriers, among others. My mentor also presented me with sound general advice along the way, such as how to conduct client meetings.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes- particularly RMI 3504, since most of my time was spent reading various policies which I learned about in that class.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I did not have a formal hiring process, as I knew the co-founders of the company from years past. They were eager to bring me aboard. Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe. The most important project i completed was a quote review for a renewal of a pollution liability policy. This particular quote contained several provisions when I reviewed it which should not have been present, since they would have severely limited coverage for the client. After locating these portions of the quote, the account managers were able to have then removed.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
I did have the opportunity to attend the company Christmas Luncheon, held on a Friday in December.
Describe the company's internship program.
Work load at the office was very manageable. Everyone in the office was very willing and able to help me if I needed it. One memorable day I had was when I got to participate in a homeless feeding program. KMRD President Kevin McPoyle is the leader of a local chapter of a charity group named Feed My Starving Children. Each October, Mr. McPoyle's chapter runs a food- packing event at Delaware Valley University, where participants pack bags of ready- to- eat food mixes which are delivered to needy peoples in the developing world. I really enjoyed the experience.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
I did not have any specific expectations going into this program. My general expectations were to gain real- world experience and learn along the way, as KMRD employs many seasoned veterans of the industry. I felt the overall time i spent here gave me this and much more.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
This was only a part- time internship so yes.
