Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I interned in product development and mainly worked on indexed and variable universal life products. I analyzed competitive positioning using spreadsheets, illustrations, and other tools. I also learned to use GGY Axis and VBA.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
We met 2-3 times during the internship and he answered any questions I had related to the internship, work environment, etc.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I stopped by John Hancock's table during the career reception and the recruiter emailed me back in October to do a Skype interview with two of their employees.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
The interns were split into three groups and were assigned a group project. This summer's topic was to present on one of John Hancock's closed blocks. Each group had to gather information, create a deck, and present in front of the actuarial community at the end of the summer.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
John Hancock provided me housing at BU.
Describe the company's internship program.
It is a 12-week internship program (with 10 other actuarial interns). I had a mentor and a manager, but I also worked with co-ops and other actuaries. The work environment was very friendly and encouraged questions and the workload was very manageable. They organized trainings in a variety of topics to introduce interns/co-ops to different actuarial functions. The intern committee also planned intern activities throughout the summer.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
I was provided time off on the day I took an actuarial exam and on July 4th.
