Risk Management and Insurance
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I sat with self-funded; small, mid and large group and medicare underwriters to learn how to generate a health insurance quote for a group. I learned renewals and new business and got to present two quotes to upper management for approval.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I had many mentors, not just one. they all helped me understand how groups get rated and quoted for for health insurance. They helped me realize I wanted to be in underwriting with all their knowledge and help.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, particularly my benefits and healthcare management courses because i was working with health insurance. I realized many of the things I learned in those classes were applicable in real life and on the job almost everyday. Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Slow but thorough. They will eventually get back to you even if you feel like they won't.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I was assigned a group project where we had to find a way to increase registration and utilization of the use of telemedicine services in Blue Cross plans. I also was assigned to present two quotes for two separate groups to upper management for approval.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Various fun group activities and outings. Sometimes free lunch and food.
Describe the company's internship program.
It was great. I felt like I was always learning and doing something productive. The workload is not too much or overbearing. There is always friendly people around to teach you and help you out. They give meaningful tasks and projects.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes, it was even better than what I expected.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
They allowed me to take time off for whatever I wanted for up to two weeks. I did not take any time off however, because I enjoyed being there too much.
