Please list your major(s) and minor(s).
Risk Management & Insurance, Finance
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
During my internship at Holman Enterprises, I worked in the Legal/Risk Department. My general duties include participating in implementing the ERM process, reviewing policies for the casualty/property renewal and assisting with the claims and safety functions. ERM-related tasks were attend committee meetings, review internal policies and procedures and classify risk questionnaire responses.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor was my supervisor and Holman's Enterprise Risk Manager. She helped me with understanding the company's structure, culture and particularly the day-to-day operations of the Legal/Risk Department. She also checked on my progress and provided feedback on my work.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
The RMI classes have helped me a lot during my internship. The Risk Capstone class provides me with a holistic risk mindset and the important elements of the ERM function in a company, which helped me a lot in drafting risk survey questions and identifying risks in internal policies and procedures. Also, I learned to read insurance policies in depth and analyze policy language to determine coverage from the Contract class, which helped me in reviewing existing policies and identifying potential coverage gaps for the renewal.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I had one phone interview with my supervisor and two on-site interviews with my supervisor and the internship program coordinator.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
All the interns were assigned to groups with mentors and each group had a different project. My group's project was to contact local charity organizations and coordinate the community service days for all interns. At the end of the internship, each group presented its project to the company's executives.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
I was brought to attend the New Jersey's Workers' Comp Seminar, the Aon Intern Day in Philadelphia and a full-day visit at Liberty Mutual in Bala Cynwyd.
Describe the company's internship program.
Holman's internship program was well coordinated, with the group project, educational workshops and period feedback. The company's culture was supportive and welcoming, as culture is emphasized in Holman's mission and vision statements.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes. I expected to learn about ERM process in real life, renewal negotiations and other risk functions, which were what I participated during my internship.
