Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
- Developed an executive summary presentation on micro-insurance which I presented to broking team leaders in order to brief them on an emerging topic of conversation with their clients
- Constructed key exhibits used in the evaluation and pricing of reinsurance treaties covering property and casualty portfolios
- Created client cover presentation slides used in debriefing international colleagues on two of Guy Carpenter’s largest clients
- Engaged in a client / peer study illustrating primary insurance trends within the regional mutual segment
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
He would review my slides for presentations, give me tips on presenting, provide some work for me to assist him with, and guide me if I had a question on any of the exhibits I was filling out.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Absolutely, I already had a better understanding of reinsurance than the other interns. This allowed me to spend more time doing work than learning the basics/fundamentals of reinsurance. Also, it goes without saying that, thanks to Gamma, I was more than prepared for the professionalism aspect with things like answering emails, eating with coworkers, and just conduct around the office.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
There was an initial online interview, followed by an in-person interview in the Philadelphia office. There were 2 interviewers and it took about 45 minutes. HR wasn't the best because they were going through an acquisition, so sometimes it took awhile to hear back.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Yes, I was assigned a project to create cover slides for a presentation for our London office to two of Guy Carpenters largest clients, Chubb and Travelers.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Internship lunches, softball leagues, happy hours, and a pad-folio.
Describe the company's internship program.
I would describe it as more of a training program. The work load was manageable with presentations, projects, excel exhibits, and other supplemental work from our mentors. There were also scheduled times for us to sit in conference rooms and watch informational presentations that were conducted in the New York office. I enjoyed the atmosphere around the office because it was a great mix of independence and ease of working with others. I had my own cubical with personal desk space space and supplies, but sat with other brokers so asking questions was quick and easy. I must also say everyone there was very friendly and always willing to answer questions for the other interns and myself.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes and no. The presentations and individual assignments were what I had expected. However, I figured there would be more work provided that gave the interns an opportunity to help out the company. Given the complexity behind reinsurance broking, I understand why they didn't give us any accounts or anything like that, but I felt like we could of been given more work to assist the brokers with things like filter/sort data or something along those lines.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
No, just a half-day on July 3rd and off July 4th.
