Role
Risk Solutions Intern
Location
Cincinnati, Ohio
When did you work there?
Summer 2018
Please list your major(s) and minor(s).
Risk Management & Insurance and Finance
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
At Great American I worked in the Excess & Surplus division. I had limited authority to rate, quote, bind, issue Property & Package renewals to policyholders and did that during my day to day. I learned how to go through a policyholders past carrier data, loss history, inspection reports, and make notes and comments on the findings for renewal. I would recommend rate increases or deductible increases and then formulate the quote letter and send that to the brokers we worked with. This was a great learning experience to act as a real property underwriter.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I didn't have a formal mentor in a mentorship program but I found great mentorship with the people I worked with. My managers and the HR managers were great with answering any questions I had at all times.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, definitely. I think Professor Wilkins contracts class prepared me the best because I was doing property insurance and she covers property in the first part of the class. Knowing what's usually excluded or included is super important.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Career Fair quick interview, on campus interview 30 mins-1 hour, then final interview they fly you to Cincinnati headquarters, stay overnight and superday 9-4pm with multiple interviews.
Were you assigned any special projects?
My final project was to create a draft of the Binding Divisions Profit Sharing Agreement with Great American and its wholesale broker partners to incentivize profitable growth. I created an IBNR factor, built in expenses, pro-rated look back, and projected a future growth bonus factor.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Paid for luxury housing 2 blocks from the office, Reds Games, Happy Hours, Top Golf, Amusement Parks, plenty of perks.
Describe the company's internship program.
Work life balance is great! The people are so friendly and genuinely care about you and are nice. I can ask a million questions and they are happy to answer.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes it was. A great program that's organized well and a lot of thought and preparation for it.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
4th of July off.
