Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
Daily tasks included field engineering visits, recaping the visits with the field engineer. Working on a flood emergency response plan template project that lasted the entirety of my internship. Worked with the account manager on some of his accounts including preparing stewardships, client service plans, and situational analysts. Worked with the operations vice president on a capstone type project to ensure that the strategies in the situational analyses were communicated in the client service plan in order to drive annual risk improvement.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor made sure that I had enough work to do, but also made sure that all my questions were answered and that I was getting good exposure to their operations. He made sure that I was learning, and made time to sit down with me to go over the things I learned, and provide more insight if necessary.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I was able to pick up on a lot of the vocab words I learned in my 3502 class.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I received the email from the listserv letting me know that FM Global wanted to interview me for their internship position. I did my first round interview at Alter when I let the interviewers know that I had another offer on the table, so they gave me an offer the next day.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Flood emergency response template - I created this for the field engineers to give to clients to fill out so the client had a documented plan in place in the event of a flood. I also worked with the operations vice president on a capstone type project to ensure that the strategies in the situational analyses were communicated in the client service plan in order to drive annual risk improvement.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Yes, happy hours were provided as well as many free lunches.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The internship program was very flexible, which allowed me the ability to see a variety of different things. There was no set schedule, so I was able to attend anything that came up. There was some online training that went along with some of the core elements of FM Global. The workload was very manageable, and the company as a whole stressed the importance of work/life balance, so I was stressed out with too much to do.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes, I received two paid vacation days.

Please list your major(s) and minor(s).
Major: Risk Management & Insurance
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
Throughout my internship, I shadowed engineers to understand how FM Global collects data points on its insureds' properties. I worked closely with the Account Engineers to learn how they make this data comprehensible for the underwriters and how this information is then used in the company's analytics. I also supported Account Managers with underwriting and key organizational functions and accompanied Account Managers in client meetings where I was able to interact with Risk Managers, Treasury and senior personnel at multinational corporations. I was able to train cross functionally with the Client Service Team, Business Risk Consultants, Claims, Field & Account Engineers, AFM subsidiary organization and large international brokerage organizations.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
He was available for me to ask any questions on anything I had learned or any material I had read. I was also able to mention anything I was interested in learning more about so that he could include me in any meetings or events on such topics.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I felt greatly prepared to sit in on meetings and follow along in the conversation happening.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
The interview process was extremely conversational and interviewers were mostly concerned with getting to know the candidate and their knowledge of the company. I received an interview after meeting two Account Managers at Gamma Iota Sigma's Intern Career Reception. After an interview with a Senior Account Manager and Account Engineer Supervisor, I received my offer and was given a week to make a decision.
Were you assigned any special projects?
Yes, I was in charge of organizing the office's charity event and luncheon. In addition, I was responsible for making a theoretical presentation about FM Global, its philosophy, key differentiators, engineering, financial standing and potential steps moving forward to give to the new executive team of a client that has recently suffered a number of losses.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
I traveled to Rhode Island, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and various places in Pennsylvania for meetings with gas, flights, hotel and food paid for. I also was invited to various lunches with Account Managers to discuss my internship experience and meet with clients.
Describe the company's internship program (atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The company's internship program is extremely dynamic and rotational, which allowed me to learn a great deal. I was able to get out of the office for a majority of my internship and travel with coworkers and clients. I also played in one of the office's softball games, which allowed me to meet more people and become more familiar with my colleagues.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes, I was able to see even more than I thought would be possible in a 12 week span and experience unforgettable opportunities.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes, two days PTO.
