Role
Actuarial Intern, Medicare Team
Location
Chicago, IL
When did you work there?
Summer 2019
Please list your major(s) and minor(s).
Majors: Actuarial Science and Risk Management & Insurance
Minors: Finance and Economics
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
Evolent is a consulting company and that shows up in the work I assigned. It was largely project based, where I would work on something for a while and report back to my managers throughout. A lot of my time was spent in SQL and VBA.
Did you have a mentor?
No
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I didn't have an officially designated mentor, but I had the ability to talk to anyone on my team. They were all very receptive to answering questions or giving guidance.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, my RMI and AS definitely helped me during my internship. Specifically, because I am a duel major, my RMI classes gave me a much better base of knowledge about the insurance industry to start from. This was particularly helpful because the health section of the insurance industry is fairly complex.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
The hiring process looked like this:
1. Interview at AS career fair
2. Interview over skype with members of different actuarial teams
3. Offer came within the week
Describe the company's internship program.
The actuarial internship program is relatively new. The structure and benefits reflected that. The work load varied depending on what they needed. As far as activities, there weren't many events geared specifically toward interns, but the company had various events like happy hours and movies in the park.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes, I had the ability to get time off when needed as long as I got it approved by my manager. For example, I was given a full day off on the day of my actuarial exam.
