Taruja worked at Travelers in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania and had the opportunity to work with several different groups during her 10 weeks there. She began by spending a month with the underwriters and account managers in the Commercial Accounts Group (CAG), which deals with middle market business insurance. In CAG, by shadowing different people she learned about the entire process of underwriting a policy, from prospecting potential business to formally issuing the policy. In Field Management, Taruja would obtain and summarize information on different agencies, then sit-in on meetings or visit the agency. She participated in a long-term project that was run by 2 interns from the home office and involved about 15 interns from across the region; they conducted research about online tools and presented it to a group of senior managers in the home office during the intern symposium in Hartford, Connecticut. Taruja feels that her risk management classes gave her background knowledge about the company and it’s products, however her work at Travelers didn’t correlate to the classes very much.
Taruja attended an intern symposium in Hartford toward the end of her internship where she met with other interns and presented their project to senior managers in the company. Taruja enjoyed the general office atmosphere because everyone was friendly, but she notes that Travelers was very conservative with company policies, regulations and formalities. She was particularly glad to be able to rotate between CAG and field management, and wishes she was at an office with other interns and intern events. Taruja would definitely recommend this company to other students.
