Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I supported consultants, associate consultants, and employee benefits specialists through completing client specific projects, presentation, and the creation of client facing materials.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship? Kris had a tremendous impact on my internship by giving me the opportunity to work on her book of business of large private entities. She allowed me to sit in on critical strategy conversations really allowing me to learn not only technical skills during my internship, but also the critical thinking behind the bigger picture for each client.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Absolutely, I had a strong foundation in Employee Benefits so that I was able to hit the ground running.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Another intern and I were asked to put together a benefit benchmark for a specific industry which represented a sizable number of CSB's large private clients. This benchmark which was to be utilized by a number of different consultants and their teams.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Internship lunches with Senior Leadership, inclusion in department lunch and learns, and weekly bagels and benefits. Describe the company's internship program.
In my experience, it was evident from day one that Conner Strong and Buckelew values its interns immensely. I was never given a project that wasn't going to either be utilized internally by our teams or was going to be sent to a client or their carrier partners. That level of inclusion on the activity of different books of business really allows the intern to feel like they had a positive impact on the company's success and made a real, material, contribution to their team.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
The internship was even better than I expected.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
We were provided with hourly PTO accrual.

Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
Update SBC's; Create benchmarks for hospital and health system clients; Peer review; Assist consultants
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor helped to facilitate day-to-day tasks and provided assistance when needed.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
My favorite project was to create a benchmark of health plans for various New Jersey and Southern PA hospitals and health systems. I also had the opportunity to create a booklet covering all NJ Health Insurance Mandates which is now utilized daily by our consultants.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Lunch and Learns; Benefit Bites; Happy Hours; Scavenger Hunt; Community Day; Emotional Intelligence Training
Describe the company's internship program.
I could not have asked for a better experience. The atmosphere was extremely welcoming and all employees, regardless of rank or tenure, went out of their way to ensure that the interns were comfortable and consistently learning. I was most satisfied with the exposure to our senior leaders. We regularly had the opportunity to have lunch with practice leaders and even our CEO. Overall, an intern program doesn't get much better than the program at Conner Strong and Buckelew. Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes, even better.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
No, but we were given a great amount of flexibility as long as we clocked 40 hours per week.

Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
It was a standard 40 hour work week. I created request for proposals of medical, dental, prescription, and voluntary benefits lines to send to insurance carriers and analyzed quotes received. I generated Excel files from insurance carrier data and delivered results to clients in meetings with Senior Consultants.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I absolutely loved my mentor! She delighted some projects to me and always asked me how I was doing and if I had any questions. She would also always give me feedback on the tasks I completed. I went to a few client meetings with her and over the course of the summer we got to know each other better. She really just made the "internship transition" so much more comforting.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes! Drennan's Employee Benefits class definitely proved to be beneficial (if you studied!!). Perhaps there was nothing I used directly when working on excel files, but all the terms we learned definitely came into play and the class just gave be a better understanding of the health care world."
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
After the reception where I spoke to HR, I had an interview at Temple on the 6th floor and then at the headquarters in Marlton.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I started out by peer-reviewing SBC and SPD documents. I then often worked on Request for Proposals. I also had the opportunity to attend different client meetings with senior consultants. I created an employee survey for one of our clients. A bigger project I worked on throughout the entire program was creating PowerPoints for Wellness Programs different carriers offer for self-funded and fully insured arrangements. Moreover, I reached out to various account managers from different carriers in regards to the different offerings they have for small employers (less than 400 lives) looking to self-fund. I created a spreadsheet highlighting and comparing different self-funding opportunities each carrier offers so that when one of our clients is looking to perhaps switch to self funding, a Conner Strong consultant can pull up this spreadsheet and guide our client in the right direction.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Every once in a while there would be catering trays with sandwiches in the cafeteria from left over Client Meetings. Also, all the intern events usually had breakfast/lunch provided for us. Community Day was a paid day where we helped out in various ways at a local Elementary School. We got free shirts and a lunch at Hooligans restaurant. On Employee Appreciation Day, everyone got big cooler bags and beach towels with Conner Strong's logo. We had free 10 minute massages that day as well as ben and jerry's ice-cream! Different managers also took me out to lunch a couple of times!
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
I absolutely loved the internship program! We had an intern event almost every week. The internship program included 2 business workshops, a Phillies Game, a Scavenger Hunt as well as employee appreciation day, Community Day and other little benefits along the way. Everyone was extremely helpful and within a few weeks I had plenty of work which I was very happy about. The company culture is great. Everyone is willing to help and everyone wants to ensure that you are truly learning. Once a week we would have weekly chats where we would discuss what we've learned, liked, could improve, etc.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
4th of July the company was closed but it was considered a payed holiday. July 3rd was also a half day and paid. I also took off two days for personal vacation (not paid). As I mentioned earlier, all the intern events through out the summer were paid as well.
If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
I did not relocate, but I drove to Marlton, NJ from Bucks County, PA. The drive took some getting used to.

Did you have a mentor?
No

There was an on campus interview, then a interview at the office. The interview at the office was for about an hour and I met my potential managers. The questions were very straight-forward, which a strong focus on personalty based questions.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I was assigned to develop a template for RFPs (Request for Proposal) for the Account team so there would be a uniform document that all consultants would use to send to vendors. I also conducted a benchmark analysis for a client's employee contribution rates. I had the opportunity to go to client meetings.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Yes. The company sponsored a networking event for the interns at a Phillies game as well as a center-city scavenger hunt in Philly.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The atmosphere was very welcoming and encouraging. I felt like I could ask any question I had and not feel ridiculed for asking. The employees I interacted with wanted me to learn as much as possible of the business. At the end of the internship all interns are required to give intern presentations on a subject of their choice.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
I had to relocate to South Jersey for the summer and had a pleasant experience. During my internship, I joined a local gym and visited various restaurants. Overall, I had a great time.

Spent a lot of time creating an excel tool used to compare rates for members of the Health Insurance Fund (HIF) compared to rates of the state. Attended over 20 client meetings. Created other excel spreadsheets for my team. I usually worked 8-4:00 or 9-5:30
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
Yes, I had two. They both taught me a lot about their experiences in the industry and how to reach my goals. They knew I wanted to be in a client facing role and made sure to allow me to attend as many meetings as possible.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I knew a lot about benefits going into my internship. It made a lot of the work easier because I had learned a lot about the different topics we dealt with
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Interview at the intern reception. Following the reception, I had one interview at Temple. Received an email a few days later from the recruiter to schedule a day to interview at Conner Strong in Marlton. Two interviews with consultants. I received an offer 5 days after the final round of interviews.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I created an excel tool to compare HIF rates to NJ Health Benefits Plan rates. The HIF will use this for years to come in order to compare their position to the competition.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Happy hour after the scavenger hunt. Bagels and benefits every Thursday, we had breakfast and talked about the benefits operations. Lunch and learns every week with different companies. All of the interns attended a Phillies game. Additionally, received lunches at some meetings. I had welcome and going away lunches with my team
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
All of the employees, not only those on my team, were very friendly and willing to help. A lot of people took the time to meet me and get to know me. We had business etiquette training and personality testing in center city. Additionally, we did a scavenger hunt with all of the interns. I had a good workload.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
I was allowed to take days off, if I needed them. Additionally, was allowed to leave early some days if I had class. I was given 3 2pm dismissals, where I received a full days paid.

Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
A normal day would be from 8:30 to 5pm. The most common task was policy checking and policy auditing. However, I was exposed to a bunch of different projects that assisted the team I was placed on, ranging from editing pre-renewal/renewal presentations, updating schedules of insurance, creating named insured matrices, sending endorsement requests to underwriters, compiling renewal invoices to clients, checking proposals against statement of values and coverage summaries, calculating and verifying audit rates, updating flood zones, etc.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
We didn't each have personal mentors, but there were two mentors assigned to the group of interns at the Philly office who were always available if we had questions. We also had weekly "Lunch & Learns" with them.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes! It feels great to be able to understand the lingo when in meetings or speaking to other employees. Also being able to have a basis in understanding in concepts when going through policies and situations.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
There were 3 rounds. First was at the intern reception where I spoke with two people, second was in the department with one person, and third was in the Philadelphia Conner Strong office with two more people. After the third round I got a call with an offer within about a week or so.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Not necessarily any one specific project, but I was always involved in mostly everything my team was working on or preparing for.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Besides the fact that there was almost ALWAYS food in the kitchen, there were the weekly "Lunch & Learns" with the mentors where lunch was brought into the conference room for us, happy hours after a day of volunteering and after the end of summer intern scavenger hunt. My managers also took me to lunch a few times throughout the summer. We also got some cool gear for employee appreciation day.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
Conner Strong offers an amazing experience for their interns. The company culture is very welcoming and upbeat. Everyone is super nice and willing to help. It is a very "work hard, play hard" atmosphere. There were a couple "formal" training sessions to get us accustomed to using the software and another intro to insurance session. Other than that there was just an online training program that we were told to complete at the beginning of the internship.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
We only had off for the 4th of July, other than that we were asked to not miss days from the internship, but they were understanding if you had valid reasons for requesting off.
