Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
Daily tasks included marketing new and renewal accounts for coverage options which encompassed communicating with underwriters and clients.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor was the principal/lead producer at the firm and I learned how she operated the agency, how to manage renewal accounts, and how to prospect clients. Additionally, I learned invaluable professional communication skills for interacting with clients, underwriters, and other professionals.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes. Managing Property Liability 1 really prepared me for the jargon and concepts used within the industry.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I created a presentation for a prospective client which overviewed their current coverage with their previous broker, as well as new coverage options that were marketed specifically for their account. I presented it with the lead producer at the prospective client's office. Another time, another intern and I collaborated on a project from start to finish which included cold calling prospective clients and marketing cheaper coverage options for them in hopes of getting their business.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Internship lunches
Describe the company's internship program.
The work load and expectations were clearly defined, and the office had a laid back atmosphere. Objectives were reviewed at the beginning and end of each week. Additionally, I appreciated the conversations that I had with my boss and the other employees which contributed to a less stressful work environment.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process? Yes because the goals of the internship were defined in the discussion with my boss leading up to the start date. My RMI classes really gave me an upper hand in understanding how insurance works, so I was unexpectedly very comfortable talking about topics with professionals.
