Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I spent most of my time meeting with underwriters in different business areas to have informational discussions, working on my intern project, attending sales calls, sitting in on meetings, and shadowing risk control visits.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentors were always there for me when I had questions. They also walked me through what they do on a day to day basis.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Managing Property and Liability Risk
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I interviewed for two different locations and had two phone interviews for each location. First was an HR screening interview, then I interviewed with two different people for the San Francisco Branch. After asking HR to interview for a different branch, I interviewed with two people from the Atlanta Branch. The hiring process took about 3 weeks and was finished by the end of March.
Were you assigned any special projects?
I was assigned an overall intern project that I spent the first 6 weeks of my internship working on. I presented this project during my intern week in Chicago to those at home office, the other interns, and management and branches that chose to fly in and see the project. There were not many guidelines for the project, we were just told to research or suggest something that could help CNA as a whole.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
I got taken on a lot of agency/broker lunches, got a housing stipend, and had the opportunity for happy hour once or twice.
Describe the company's internship program.
The atmosphere was extremely welcoming and every person at CNA is willing to help you despite their busy workload. The workload for the internship was semi-light in the beginning when I was still trying to figure out my project, but I made myself busy by asking people to go on sales calls and risk control visits. I was given a housing stipend that was more than enough for the summer. While there weren't as many outside work activities as I had hoped, CNA Atlanta Branch at least is working on improving that. I truly enjoyed going to my internship every day and appreciated working for such an awesome company!
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
It was everything I expected and more.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
I was able to work from home on some days over the summer. I was also given time off for July 3-5. The Monday and Friday of intern week were also considered travel days where we still got paid to fly to and from Chicago.
