Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I would assist in a variety of different tasks throughout the summer. I utilized a system called Tracker to update any financial discrepancies. Additionally, I created quotes using a system called "UWriter" in order to streamline the sales process. Throughout the summer, I worked on an intern project where I researched the most/least profitable SIC/industries for A&H, made recommendations for improvement, suggested cross-sell opportunities, and created sample underwriting quotes.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
I feel that I was better prepared for my internship because of the RMI classes I had took prior to beginning. I understood the terminology and processes that my co-workers were using. Because of this, I was able to participate more in discussion and suggest new ideas.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Applied/Interviewed/Accepted in December 2018; I did not attend the intern reception
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I had a summer long internship project that I worked on. The project was to research the most and least profitable industries for the A&H department as categorized by SIC. From this research, I compiled a list of companies that A&H currently doesn't write within the profitable industries and prepared a cross-sell opportunity for them. Additionally, I came up with a list of industries and companies that are the least profitable for the A&H department and suggested ways to improve the profitability.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Professional Development Event, Weekly lunches with managers/co-workers, Happy hours
Describe the company's internship program.
Everyone at Chubb was extremely friendly, welcoming, and willing to help the interns learn. The work load was a bit light, but definitely included some interesting projects and activities. The program had several professional development workshops for the interns, allowing us to improve our communication, networking, and interviewing skills. My department was very social, coordinating several lunches and happy hours.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
The internship was what I expected from the interviewing and hiring process. My manager explained the department and the responsibilities during my interview.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
No PTO, but managers were flexible in allowing interns to take days off if needed

Actuarial Science
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I worked in the Global Analytics department (also known as Predictive Modeling) at Chubb. The work done by this group is more like that of a data scientist rather than a traditional actuary. I primarily worked on the commercial auto side with some smaller projects in D&O.
Did you have a mentor?
No
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Knowing the fundamentals of statistics from classes definitely helped prepare me for my role. Since my role was close to data science, a lot of the skills I had to pick up on the job or through prior experiences outside of classes (Python, GLM modeling, regularization, machine learning, etc.).
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
First I spoke briefly with a hiring manager at the career fair. A few weeks later, I had a 30 minute interview with an actuary who is in charge of early career and intern hiring. A few weeks after that, I was invited for on-site interviews at the Philadelphia office. I had 5 separate interviews with early career actuaries from various groups which lasted 30 minutes each. I received my offer soon after that.
Were you assigned any special projects?
The main project our auto team was working on involved developing a predictive model for auto loss frequency and severity. I also worked on my own project analyzing a potential variable to add in a D&O predictive model.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
There were some lunches with interns and the team that were provided. There was also an actuarial picnic which included food, transportation, and a day off. I was studying for an exam at the time so my manager allowed me to take some time during work to study if there was nothing else going on.
Describe the company's internship program.
The internship program at Chubb is early in it's development so there isn't anything formal to it. Interns are essentially treated like full time employees and work alongside employees. Depending on the group and manager, there may be specific projects given just for interns to work on.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
It exceeded my expectations in terms of the work I was doing and how I was treated. I enjoyed being treated like a full time employee and given the responsibility of one. The work was technical and I found it interesting.
