Chelsea Balerno worked for Westrope in Kansas City, MO this past summer. Her internship was divided into informal 3-week intervals. The first three weeks she spent in property shadowing a different broker who was responsible for a different geographic region. The next few weeks she worked in claims with brokers who handled large accounts. She attributes her success at Westrope to her preparatory classes in International Risk Management and Actuarial Science. She was able to tackle large projects; an example of one is, designing a supplement program for Excel in the catastrophe-modeling sphere. As a result of this program the company can now better attribute average annual losses to various levels of property coverage.
Chelsea didn’t have an official mentor, but found a former Temple graduate who was very successful at Westrope that was able to advise her on many aspects of the job. Her favorite thing about the company was that they provided their interns with real work, as opposed to busy work such as filing. She also enjoyed the various company outings to a football game, blues festival, and a jazz club. In addition Westrope provided her with exquisite living arrangements in the Marriot Residents Inn. She would without a doubt recommend the company.
