Role
Actuarial Intern - Model Development
Location
Des Moines, IA
Please list your major(s) and minor(s).
Majors: Actuarial Science, RMI Minors: Statistics, Economics
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
During my internship, I was tasked with updating and streamlining tools for data analysis and reporting as well as using these tools to price products. This involved documenting assumptions, methodologies, and procedures and reporting them to the rest of the Model Development Team. I spent a lot of time using both VBA and Python.
Did you have a mentor?
No
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
My AS classes were very valuable for preparing me for my internship, especially Theory of Interest and Modeling. One hole in my knowledge was my lack of coding ability. Because I was on the Model Development Team, I spent most of my time working with code, which was a skill I had to pick up on the job rather than one I got from my classes.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
No
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Yes, there were opportunities to network with management and other interns. These opportunities included team lunches, bowling nights, and a golf outing. Another perk that they had was an on campus food court.
Describe the company's internship program
The atmosphere at work was fairly laid back. We were able to wear jeans and a polo for the whole summer. The hours were usually from 8-9am to 4-5pm depending on the work assigned that day with an hour for lunch.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes, the internship matched my expectations from the interview process.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
I was able to negotiate some time away from the office to study for and take exam FM, but this was at the discretion of my manager.
