Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
Cold calling for established producers, assisting producers on their projects (specifically, depopulating the Workers Compensation Pennsylvania state fund pool), attending weekly and monthly sales meeting, and a 2 week Intern Sales Competition.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
Derek Zambino helped me with tips on how to cold call, career choices, and had an open door policy. I felt very comfortable with coming to him with any questions I had.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Absolutely Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I made a great connection with Evan Merkelson, the hiring manager, and reached out to him. He recommended me to the Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) office and after I interviewed with them I was hired!
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Evan started the first Regional Intern Sales Competition. We had to make cold calls, set appointments and ultimately book the business!
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Lunches, meetings, happy hours and I won an Apple Watch from the Sales Competition for placing 1st!
Describe the company's internship program.
The atmosphere was very family oriented, everyone was close with each other. Other than the work provided by the 12-week Sales program, work load was dependent on me asking other producers for work! Must have an entrepreneurial spirit.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes, as needed.

Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
During my time at Assured Partners this summer, I was introduced to the sales side of an insurance agency and got to try different sales techniques to engage different types of clients. In addition, I was able to have exposure with other departments around the office to learn more about what an agency does for its clients.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor was responsible for making sure I was staying on track with weekly projects and invited me to several meetings in and out of the office.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Definitely. Without a base knowledge of insurance and the industry, I would not have excelled as much as I did this past summer. In meetings with clients or carriers, my knowledgeable comments and questions set me apart and impressed the individuals I was meeting with.
Were you assigned any special projects?
I was assigned to create a sales initiative for a specific industry and tested sales techniques to set up introductory meetings with clients. This project had several components, which I thought of as weekly projects that would help me achieve my goal.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
I was invited on several meetings outside of the office and attended conferences at other regional offices. I was also enrolled in a course to become a Certified Workers Compensation Counselor. In addition, there were several sporting events and happy hours to attend.
Describe the company's internship program.
This is a new internship program so my summer consisted of mostly independent work. The office was welcoming and encouraged me to ask questions whenever possible. I was able to live at home while working here which made commuting very easy. This is a great internship program for someone who takes initiative with independent work. Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes! This internship introduced me to the sales aspect of an insurance agency and I feel that I learned so much about insurance sales while I was there!

Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Interviewed at the reception and had a first round interview on campus. The interviewers decided I fit the role as an intern in Hunt valley as it is their benefits platform agency. I then had a phone interview with the Director of Data Analytics and was offered the internship.

I was asked to determine the validity of claims from Wellness vendors by using aggregated data in our warehouse and make a write up. It was then posted on our LinkedIn and later published by the industry blog Employee Benefit Adviser.

I had much more work as the only intern than I did at another Philadelphia based brokerage in the previous summer. I learned a lot from Scott Mayer, my boss, who was a speaker at this years CEBS conference in Boston.
