Major in RMI and minor in Statistics
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I shadowed various underwriters in three different divisions (US Programs, DBA and XS Casualty). I completed various pricing models, wrote referrals to management, submitted quotes to brokers and completed binders on real accounts.
Did you have a mentor?
No
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I didn't have a mentor per say, but I was able to reach out to anyone if I needed help or advice.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes - they provided me with background knowledge that i utilized in my internship.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Very simple - RMI Internship reception and one interview on campus
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Yes - a final presentation to senior management on an emerging topic of our choosing (CTE and Concussions). I completed it with the other intern.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
(Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.) Many broker lunches, a housing stipend, several happy hours, was able to attend Broker day at Aon Describe the company's internship program (atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.). Everyone was very willing to help me when needed and the workload was not overwhelming. Housing was easy to find in both cities. The internship showed me the day to day life of an underwriter, which is what I was looking to get out of my internship. I also was able to attend several training workshops for new hires that exposed me to other divisions of Allied World that I was not able to experience in my internship.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Had time off for several holidays, and I was able to take a half day for an emergency.

Risk Management and Insurance
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I assisted underwriters with the underwriting process, including reviewing submissions, communicating with brokers, and pricing the accounts. In addition, I completed a summer-long project on the topic of CTE and Concussions, which I presented to high-level employees.
Did you have a mentor?
No
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I did not have a formal mentor, but I sought the advice and help of various people in my time there.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I clearly had a strong background in insurance that made understanding the work and assimilating to the work environment much simpler.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I made a connection with the CEO of the company due to my affiliation with the Temple Club Ice Hockey team. I followed up with him and met some people at Allied World prior to the internship reception. I then spoke to the recruiter at the reception, had one interview, and received an internship offer.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I was tasked with researching CTE and Concussions and doing a coverage analysis on the issue. My coworkers wanted to know how they should handle the risk and how they can be thought-leaders on this topic.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Paid lunches were extremely common with both coworkers and brokers as well. A housing stipend was provided in addition to hourly wages. There were frequent happy hours and industry events that I was allowed to attend and were often free of cost for me.
Describe the company's internship program (atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
There were two interns including myself, and it was the first year Allied World had a formal internship program. Overall, it was fairly structured and organized as to which people I was working with and which tasks I should be completing. The work load was however large you wanted it to be because most work I asked if I could help out with. In recognition of New York City housing prices, Allied World provided a stipend for housing that covered the better part of the housing costs. My coworkers were happy to invite me to afterwork events, which made me feel welcomed and like I was a part of the company.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes, the internship was what I expected. If anything, my experience at Allied World exceeded my expectations.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
I had a funeral to attend during my time at Allied World and my manger had no problem with me missing two days of work. They were very understanding and accommodating.
