Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
Other than a week of training in New York, there is no formal internship program at AIG, so each interns experience is dependent on their manager's involvement. I was fortunate to have been placed with an extremely engaging manager, who provided me ample opportunities to broaden my 10 week experience. During my internship, I was afforded the opportunity to underwrite new business and renewal accounts. I also communicated with brokers on the phone and participated in some broker engagement through happy hours and sporting events. In addition to this, I assisted underwriters on my team with a variety of tasks.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor, or 'Navigator' was my day-to-day advisor and peer. Generally, navigators at AIG are newer to the field (~3 years experience) and are there to answer any and all questions you might have.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes. Many of the concepts learned in class directly translated to the work place at AIG. Specifically, the material from RMI 3502 prepared me extremely well, and allowed me to hit the ground running.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Online video interview, as well as an in-person 'super day' with several interviews.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
There were several happy hours throughout the summer, as well as some lunch and learn opportunities with guest speakers. As interns, we also had a dedicated webinar with members of the AIG executive team, which was an exclusive opportunity to hear them speak, as well as ask them questions.
Describe the company's internship program.
AIG has no formal internship program, and I was treated like a full-time employee. I was generally an independent worker, and had plenty of work to keep me engaged throughout the summer. Outside of work, I played for AIG's softball team, about one game per week, which gave me a great chance to meet coworkers and network.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
4th and 5th of July were paid holidays

Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
Assisted underwriters with their daily tasks and quoted new business specifically in the cyber field. Worked daily with other interns on a project to increase cross-division sales at the point of submission by utilizing Salesforce and other tools.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I shadowed my mentor for my first week to get a feel for systems and day-to-day operations in the Philadelphia office. When he had extra work he would send it to me and I was able to work from start to finish on quoting new business. He was always available to answer questions, and spoke very candidly, giving me a greater understanding of AIG's operations.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I was able to recognize industry jargon and communicate effectively during meetings.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
One round with three interviewers after the intern reception. Asked questions related to how I would handle certain situations and what interests me about the insurance industry.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I rotated between three divisions in the financial lines department and each assigned a project.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Many happy hours, lunches with brokers and clients, and a city-wide insurance softball league with weekly games and an end of season tournament.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
There were three days of formal training in New York before we reported to our work offices. There were some structured aspects such as a team project between interns, but a lot of leeway to ask questions and learn about other topics that interested me.

My main projects include a full Profitability Study and 3 AvE analysis, generalized underwriting deliverables and presented them to the lead actuary and chief underwriting officer.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
The assigned mentor is a great asset and a key factor of my internship experience. He spent approximately 1 hour per day to help me walk through the ratemaking process.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
As for the pricing side, the information from exam 5 is more widely used in daily work. However, the fundamental knowledges from exam P, FM, MFE is essential to the success of internship too.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
After the screening interview, there are only 1 more around with a FCAS and a FSA separately. No specific actuarial knowledge is required. The interview is mostly based on behavior questions.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Generalized a 20-page AIG Financial Lines Pricing Actuarial cliff note containing both general actuarial and AIG specific information for actuarial internship program.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Happy Hours & Bowling events

Utilized R-Software to develop the first version of Loss Development Factors for 23 durations for Commercial Loss Sensitive Casualty lines by using a General Additive Model code. Developed Premium Triangles for Commercial Loss Sensitive Casualty Profit Lines to assess the growth of premium over 24 years, and calculate and select Age-to-Age premium development factors in order to calculate Ultimate Premium to contribute to AIG's 2016 Primary Casualty Profitability Study.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor was usually busy with Ad-Hoq requests and other various projects. However, I really enjoyed the freedom I got to work on my projects and spend some time with them. That gave me the opportunity to independently work on my projects and 'own' the work that I do. That being said though, my mentor was always available for questions and was very helpful in helping me learn SAS and R.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
My Actuarial Science courses did not prepare me as much. The RMI courses, on the other hand, were quite helpful in learning the technical terms and insurance terms that I came across on a daily basis. Also, attending Gamma meeting was probably the most helpful, and it should be a choice on this question.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Met with representatives from AIG at the Career Fair, and had two 30 minute interviews with Actuaries from AIG the following day.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I did not have one special project like you'll see many interns talk about. I was involved in a department wide project called the Profitability study in which I contributed by selecting premium development factors, analyzing AIG's $12 Billion Loss Sensitive Casualty Business, and using a GAM model to develop Loss Development Factors for Loss Sensitive Casualty lines.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
AIG does not offer housing to its interns in New York City. Candidates should either consider looking for housing at NYU, or getting an AirBnB.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The internship program is a formal internship program. The first three days involve training with background on AIG, team-building skills, and insurance knowledge. The atmosphere is very friendly and supportive. However, be prepared to work and spend time with projects before asking questions. It is a highly admired trait. The work load wasn't too over bearing. In fact, I enjoyed having something to work on almost every other day. The internship program does provide helpful webinars that interns are welcome to attend on VBA, Predictive Modelling, Reserving, etc.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
No time off apart from the July 4th Holiday
If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
Moving to a new city can be hard only if you're not willing to adapt to life in a new city. It was hard at first, but I gradually came to like New York City and it was fun. I enjoyed being able to explore Downtown and the Wall Street area.
