When did you work there? (ex: Summer 2018)
Summer 2019
Please list your major(s) and minor(s).
RMI major with an International Business minor
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I supported professional lines in their underwriting department. After shadowing senior underwriters for several days across several classes of business, we were given the authority to work up, price, and quote accounts. We rotated through Tech E&O, MedMal, Architects and Engineers, Misc. PL, Insurance agents & brokers E&O, and combo GL/PL policies. We worked directly with other underwriters and brokers to establish relationships. Additionally, we worked on a summer long project relating to Lawyers Professional Liability, which we eventually presented to senior leadership.
Did you have a mentor? Yes If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
She helped tremendously, as a point of reference for general questions and concerns.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Without a doubt.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
2 step process
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Yes. We were tasked with a summer long project to research and decide whether or not Admiral should enter the Lawyer Professional Liability market. We eventually presented our findings to approximately 30 people, including senior leadership.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Internship Lunches, Admiral Appreciation Day (field day event), Sports Games, Happy Hours, Networking Events, All Risks University (travel expenses and lunch), bagels offered daily, On site gym, etc.
Describe the company's internship program
The atmosphere was very team oriented. Admiral follows Berkeley's culture in regards to prioritizing its people. The work load varied from week to week, but was always reasonable. As far as housing, I stayed in Philly this summer and drove over the bridge every day to get to work. Admiral does not cover these expenses. Admiral often hosted outside work activities and even hosted special events in honor of the interns.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
It was better than I expected, considering I've never had a risk related internship.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
We had the ability to take off, but of course it was unpaid.

Risk Management and Insurance: Property and Casualty Track
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
My day to day consisted of reviewing claim files, in-depth analysis of policies, bi-weekly claims round-table meetings, initial claim evaluations. I attended a three day court trial, which was an amazing experience. My mentor arranged an outing with an independent adjuster. Also all the interns went for a day trip to Baltimore, MD to watch underwriters give a presentation about Admiral to newly hired brokers. By itself, E&S is an exciting business but Admiral really gave me a dynamic experience.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor helped me tremendously with day to day operations and with our intern group project. They often checked in with me to make sure I was doing well, and they were always available to answer questions. My mentor graduated from Temple’s RMI program in 2016, so they were able to give me insight into the transition from college to a full time job.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, much of the vocabulary from 3504 and concepts from all RMI courses were used daily.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
The interviewing process was very quick. After the reception I had a 1st round interview in Temple with a senior HR manager. Later I went to the Mount Laurel Office and had two approximately thirty minute interviews. The first was with two claim unit heads. The second was with the vice president of claims and the senior vice president of general counsel and claims. Overall an offer was made in about a month.
Were you assigned any special projects?
Yes, myself and the other 5 interns collectively worked on a presentation regarding a potential new product. We worked on the project for 6 weeks, and presented our recommendations to the executive board, our managers, mentors, and others. The project was complex and extremely detail oriented but an amazing experience.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
The interns had multiple lunches with the heads of each department. We were taken to a Phillies game. We were invited to an employee appreciation event. There were multiple happy hours. the company provides a gym on site, free fruit on Monday, and free bagels and soft pretzels everyday.
Describe the company's internship program.
The office had a very friendly atmosphere, everyone willing to help answer questions and provide insight. The workload was not overwhelming at all. My managers were accommodating with my department workload when our project deadline approached. Admiral has a softball team which I joined, it was very fun and a great way to get to know your coworkers. I was able to pick the hours I worked which was amazing as I beat traffic.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes, my expectations were exceeded!
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes, we were allowed to take unpaid time off, I took off a half day to sit for an exam and I went on a 3 day vacation and it was not an issue at all.
