Please list your major(s) and minor(s).
Risk Management & Insurance (Major) and International Business (Minor)
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I assisted with both client facing tasks, such as board or client meetings, and back-end work, including RFP research, excel projects, and a mortgage primer.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I had several mentors and each facilitated different sessions or meetings to help me better understand Willis Re from varying functional area.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Although reinsurance is not covered much in class, having a basic understanding of facultative and treaty reinsurance allowed me to pick up the necessary jargon faster and understand varying coverages.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I did not interview - was directly hired after meeting the Branch Manager/EVP during a CPCU Society meeting.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I designed and implemented a dashboard for prospective clients, including financials, credit ratings, BCAR, and lead brokers. I also created a comprehensive client biography book to identify lead underwriters and simplify future trips and market information. Another notable project was a mortgage primer that I developed and assisted with. The goal was to educate and prepare clients or internal colleagues on the global mortgage insurance and reinsurance market.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
During the internship, I had the pleasure of attending several client dinners, lunches, happy hours, and food in the office. I did not have the time, but there were also opportunities to go to events in New York.
Describe the company's internship program.
The internship was very unstructured, but it allowed me to experience almost every role in the reinsurance brokerage. As the reinsurance industry is highly cyclical and renewals dictate the pace of work, I had very busy times and very slow times during my internship. Overall, it was a very productive and interesting experience, with the benefit of a great culture.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
I had no expectations, as I did not interview, however I really enjoyed it.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
I was allowed to take off whenever I wanted, however I only took off once for a family trip.
