Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
As a Voluntary Benefits Analyst Intern at Trion, I learned about different group voluntary coverage's such as accident, critical illness, hospital indemnity, legal, ID theft and student loan benefits. I worked on analyzing client's health coverages to determine best voluntary benefit strategy and was in constant contact with Trion's carrier partners throughout the marketing process. Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I had a formal mentor/manager who was a Temple alum and the senior analyst on Trion's VB team. My mentor was responsive to all of my questions and supportive throughout the entirety of my internship. At the beginning of my internship, my mentor taught me the ins and outs of different VB coverages. Throughout my internship, I had check-ins with my mentor regarding my progress and overall experience at Trion.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I felt very prepared from day one at my internship. I immediately understood certain aspects of client's health plans (HDHP w/ HSA, HMO, PPO). In addition, during certain workshops (for example a workshop on stop-loss) I was prepared to ask meaningful questions and add to the discussion.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I talked to one of the VB analysts at the intern reception on Thursday. I then had an interview with members of the VB team the next Tuesday and accepted the internship that same week.
Were you assigned any special projects?
I was assigned a few special projects throughout my internship. For example, I worked on creating a standard RFP workbook for one of Trion's carrier partners.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Trion provided us with many supplemental benefits besides the pay. We had around 10+ lunch and learns throughout the entirety of the internship. During lunch and learns, the interns met individuals from different functional areas of the company (underwriting, VB, client service, benefit admin., data analytics, marketing, finance etc.). In addition, we had lunch and learns on topics such as career development and time management. We also had a breakfast with the principles, a community service day and went to a Phillies game where we sat in the Trion box. On the VB team there were also benefits such as a welcome lunch, nail/spa day and summer picnic.
Describe the company's internship program.
Trion has a very robust internship program and collaborative environment. All of the analysts I directly worked with were Temple alumni and eager to answer all of my questions. I always had work to do, however was never overwhelmed. The lunch and learns and professional development activities provided an opportunity for all the interns to meet individuals that worked in different areas of the company.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes. I was told during the interview process that as a VB analyst intern I would be given "real" work. Throughout the internship, I was able to make useful contributions to the VB team and learned a great amount.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?

Some of my main tasks included: spreadsheet renewals and alternatives for clients, market lines of coverage including Medical/Rx, Dental, Vision and Life/Disability, perform disruption/discount analyses to determine the impact of a vendor change, conduct demographic analyses, etc.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
He helped me by not only explaining each of my tasks thoroughly, but also by going over background information and the reasoning behind Trion's processes and procedures. This allowed me to understand the tasks I was completing more efficiently.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes. My RMI classes have me a core understanding of benefits terms and hot topics in the industry. This helped me understand discussions that occurred in internal meetings. I could also focus on asking more big picture questions rather than basic questions about what everything means.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
The first round interview was held at the Gamma Iota Sigma career reception on Temple's campus. The following week I had an on-campus interview - one half hour round with 2 Trion employees and another half hour round with 2 other Trion employees. During the interview I was asked about my previous internship, my skills and behavioral questions. I received the offer within the next 48 hours after the second round interview.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
My manager recently was assigned a new client that had a complicated benefits structure. His goal was to revamp the client's entire benefits arrangement. I was in charge of putting together and sending RFP's for Medical/Rx, Vision, Dental and LI/DI. I collected all of the proposals and spread the alternatives. I also conducted analyses to determine the strength of each vendor's network. This allowed me to see the RFP process from beginning to end and have a full understanding of how vendors are analyzed.

I always had a balanced workload where I did not feel too stressed, yet I kept busy.

I spoke with Trion at the intern reception on Thursday, got called back for an interview at Temple on Monday, and received an offer on Tuesday.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Yes, there were a few clients I worked on from start to finish. I sent out the RFPs, went through the proposals to compile a product comparison, then created a client presentation, and attended the client meeting.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Trion provided us with free lunches and took all the interns to a Phillies game.

We were also invited to training sessions to sharpen our professional skills, such as, business etiquette training, presentation skills training, customer service training, etc.
