Actuarial Science Provide a general description of the work at your internship. I worked on several projects focusing on managing risk for various catastrophes such as wildfire, hail, and flood.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
She provided advice about succeeding in the internship throughout the 10 weeks during weekly meetings and coffee chats.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, especially the AS P&C capstone as it included a module on catastrophes, AIR, reinsurance, and cat bonds.

The return internship process included two 30 minute interviews and an online application.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
One cool project was about how hail frequency and severity changed after the recession.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Lunches, housing, and several networking and social events

I was assigned one large project to work on throughout the duration of the summer.

Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor helped me work on my project, set up job shadows, and prepare for my full-time interview.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, my classes gave me context behind things I heard in meetings and during job trainings.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
The interviewing/hiring process was straightforward and the timeline was communicated effectively.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Housing was provided to interns. In addition, there were several networking events such as ice cream socials, baseball/soccer games, and a picnic.
Describe the company's internship program
I always had work to do during the day, and my manager/team were available to help me. There were several activities outside of work that helped keep us busy.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
We received time off for the Fourth of July.

I worked in the Loss Sensitive Workers Compensation Reserving department. I evaluated the emergence of workers compensation claims from 1973 and prior. Also, I updated frequency and severity assumptions used to calculate IBNR amounts for a certain group of claims.

Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, my actuarial courses helped me better understand certain concepts, such as reserving.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I was assigned one project that I worked on through the course of the summer.The project was to evaluate existing assumptions used in reserve calculations. Based on my findings, I had to recalculate the frequency and severity assumptions to make sure the reserve amounts were accurate.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes. I was able to learn a lot about the P&C Industry as well as actuarial reserving. Also, through my project, I was able to strengthen my technical skills.

I worked in the Special Liabilities Group and created a new claim level reserve monitoring report using Excel and VBA throughout my internship. Additionally, I participated in a number of networking events as I got to know the other interns and actuaries throughout the company.

If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
He gave me advice about navigating my internship during the 10 weeks of the summer.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, the most important part was Professor Moore's excel project that taught me vital excel skills that I used during the internship.

I had a screening interview, a first round at Temple, and an on-site interview before I got hired.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I had a few ad-hoc projects that involved online file organization and some reserving methodology work.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Internship lunches with various hiring classes, social events such as a kickball game, housing

Amazing culture, great training for technical and business acumen skills, great social events, amazing overall project
