My work primarily focused around three areas. I would review and store Certificates of Insurance that the office would receive. Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
I worked close to full time during the summer and just under 20 hours per week during the semester. The two main day-to-day components are reviewing incoming certificates of insurance and issuing outgoing certificates as well as maintaining the minors on campus database. I was assigned various projects throughout the year and attended meetings to experience how risk management is approached in higher education.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
Every person in the department acted as a type of mentor that involved me in projects outside of my daily tasks.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
My classes provided a basic understanding of the industry but hands on experience from the internship was much more valuable.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
It was a two part interview including a presentation to the department.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Over the summer I was assigned to interview over 30 faculty at the university to learn how they work with risk management. I put together numerous presentations and worked to act as a liaison between students and administration.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
I attended lunches and had opportunities to attend industry seminars.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The internship is year round and exposes the intern to risk managing, claims, treasury functions, and the workings of a higher-ed captive.
