Yes, all the concepts I learned in the Group Benefits Capstone (LTD, STD, etc) aided in my projects as well as reduced the amount of time needed to get up to speed on the concepts.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Throughout the whole internship, I conducted confidence testing on eligible lives data per policy to be later used in predictive analytics.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Departmental lunches, Happy Hours.
Describe the company's internship program.
Amazing culture and analytical people. The actuarial department was open to to ask questions and I had the opportunity to work with people with different amount of years of experience. Workload was moderate, not too challenging or time consuming. We, as a department, also played jeopardy and board games which helped me get to know everyone early on.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Internship exceed expectations, had a lot of fun (per Reliance's core values).

Risk Management & Insurance
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I worked on the pre-sale side under my mentor Jen Miller. She underwrites Reliance's NY and Wisconsin offices. Sales reps would bring us employers looking for coverage. We would follow Reliance's underwriting guidelines to decide if we wanted to quote the group or not and at what price. I did experience rating for STD groups over 100 lives, DBL groups over 50 lives, etc. I communicated back and forth with sales reps to help sell business.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I shadowed her and got to help her with the work in her queue.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I went to the intern reception and spoke with Reliance there. I then did an on campus interview and received a call only 2 weeks later about the job.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I worked on cleaning up Reliance's voluntary lines submissions. My job was to look back at the voluntary products sold within the last year and confirm/update the correct number of eligible lives and participation of the group.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
We received many free lunches and got to hang out with the other interns in the company from all different departments. We got to go to a Phillies game with our department, many happy hours on Wednesday's, and free lunches when sales reps were in town. Our bosses also took us to lunch.
Describe the company's internship program.
A lot of the younger people who work at Reliance are from Temple so they knew previous teachers we had, the knowledge we had, and were very easy to talk to and ask questions. The overall atmosphere was very friendly and easy going. We are allowed to wear jeans and sneakers everyday of the week and listen to music at our desks. Everyone was willing to help us learn.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
No

Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
I worked 7.5 hours each day in the Underwriting Department on the Renewal team. I did actual underwriting and both manually and experience rated policies that were up for renewal. I evaluated their individual risks and decided on renewal positions which I then would relay to Sales Representatives.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My boss was also my mentor. He helped in every way possible and taught me everything that I now know about underwriting.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, RMI 3501 prepared me for this internship. Each underwriter was shocked at how much we already knew about life and disability insurance before starting work.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
One interview in their office. I sat with each of the 3 AVPs for about 30 minutes each and it was a very laid-back interview.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I had a few projects where I was expected to analyze data through excel. A big project that I worked on had to do with Doctor/Lawyer groups and the trends that I could find dealing with their coverage amounts and claims.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Happy hours, lunches, dinner.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
There was about two weeks of formal training in underwriting. After that we started from the basics and built our way up from there.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
I requested two Mondays off and it was not a problem
