Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
The internship provided a rotational program through 5 different lines of business at Nationwide. When in each program we learned how to underwrite that specific line by reviewing coverage forms and shadowing underwriters. Each program had a complimentary project based on the various needs of that line.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Definitely, P&C 1 helped me to better understand the mechanisms of the industry as well as specific terms and practices. Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I applied through the RIMS society and had a phone and Skype interview
Were you assigned any special projects?
Gathered data on rate to bind ratio for the Personal Lines Department. Created marketing materials for various P&C programs. Evaluated company websites and portals for improvement.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Housing stipend
Describe the company's internship program.
Casual atmosphere, moderate work load occasional happy hours
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes, it was very focused on learning and development
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
4 day weekend provided for 4th of July

Yes, a project on claims history and motor vehicle accidents.

Friendly environment. Not a large work load, but a lot of classes.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
More training than on the job training than expected

No, other than holidays.

Standard work hours M-F 8-4:30. No standard daily tasks, worked on individual and group projects of varying length and complexity as assigned by manager.

Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
Manager was extremely accessible and had an open-door policy.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, RMI classes helped prepare me for my internship, as they gave me the theory behind what we were doing in the real world and more importantly, the why.

First round interview on Campus. Second round phone interview (panel).
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Worked on a team to implement new Rating Relativities for commercial property windstorm coverage in the state of Texas.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Taken out to lunch a few times over the course of the summer.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The internship program is relatively laid back. It was very unstructured, as this was the first summer Nationwide has had interns at this location. Felt like I was contributing to real-world projects the same as my full-time team members were.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes. Was allowed to take an unpaid day off to take care of some family business that had come up.
