Actuarial Science
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
At my internship, I checked models in Milliman’s proprietary financial modeling software, MG-ALFA, to ensure accuracy of projection inputs, asset segments, other global inputs, and model output. In addition, I conducted research using Moody’s published reports to develop a Default Cost Study for Corporate Bonds and Structured Securities, which contained default rates to be used in clients’ future reinvestment strategies. I also built an Aggregate Liability Model in MG-ALFA that was frequently updated with clients’ new cash flows and reserve amounts. I also created queries and reports in Microsoft Access to summarize exported loan amount data in Excel pivot tables.
Did you have a mentor?
No
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
I feel my Actuarial Science classes helped me better prepare for my internship because I used cash flow analysis and present value of these cash flows.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I was assigned a litigation project where one of our consulting actuaries was an expert witness. I analyzed some of the data in access and compiled it in pivot tables.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Softball Team
Describe the company's internship program.
Most people worked in the office. We had some office parties, which helped the atmosphere. I was not provided housing. I also joined the softball team, which helped me meet people in other departments.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes, the internship was what I expected.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
If I had an appointment or went on vacation I was graded days off.
