Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I changed compression by year and age banding in response to a model validation report that expressed concerns about the effect of compression on the model, ran valuations in Healthmaster polysystems, and changed expense rates until the output reached a desired reserve calculation updated and created Excel files that clearly laid out each policy name with corresponding reserve assumptions.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
They had lunch with me and answered any questions that I had
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, they gave me general knowledge of products that I was working with
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Pretty late in the game, interview in late December, offer in January
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I was tasked with creating excel files that essentially listed each product we had in LTC, IDI, and LTD and the corresponding assumptions that were used to calculate reserves.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
We had lunch with the CFO, workshops twice a week, a student welcoming committee, and a happy hour.
Describe the company's internship program.
The atmosphere was very friendly and inviting. There were always people around to answer questions. My work load was lighter but other interns were busier throughout the summer depending on your manager. There was not housing. There were some social activities like walks around the building, ice cream events, lunches with various parties, happy hours, and team picnics.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes, my interview process was friendly and not intimidating and the internship lived up to any expectations I had on how welcoming and helpful everyone was.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
No
