Actuarial Science
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I worked on a separate intern project throughout the summer that consisted of learning about all the different life and annuities products Lincoln currently sold and highlighting key details and differences between those products.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
There was a consistent time slot scheduled to touch base weekly, and we covered many topics including better understanding Lincoln's different products, locations, and culture; sitting next to someone as they worked on their day-to-day; and learning about their exam process.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Corporate finance gave a good introduction to ratios and balance sheets to better understand the financials, and the modeling courses gave a base level understanding of the math that underpins the insurance products. I took an MS course on Visualization using Tableau which was very helpful as my team also used the same program to deliver statistical information.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
Lincoln conducted a screening interview at the career fair, followed by an on-campus interview. An offer was received around a week later. Internship location and background check information was completed during the first week of April.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Housing was provided. There was an intern welcome and goodbye lunch as well as a bowling outing planned specifically for the Actuarial Development Program. Interns were also encouraged to join business group/team-wide functions, which included a Phillies baseball game, axe throwing, a potluck, and a few happy hours.
Describe the company's internship program.
Despite Radnor being the corporate office, the actuarial department was relatively relaxed and easy going. Lincoln's policy of "dress for your day" meant even jeans were allowed if you were in a back office role and weren't planning on having any important meetings. Everyone was very helpful and open to questions. The three interns got to meet all the full time employees in a 3x1 situation including the CRO to learn about their backgrounds and thoughts on the industry. I was assigned another intern as a roommate, and she was in graphic design, so I also got to hear about a completely different aspect of the company from her.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Since I said I was open to any location, I expected to go to Greensboro since that location hired more interns (10+) than Radnor (3), and I also expected to be in a more typical pricing or reserving role rather than working in enterprise risk management, which was more learning about the company as a whole rather than working with anything too technical.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Holidays were paid, managers were flexible if extra unpaid time off was needed.

Risk Management and Insurance
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
A lot of work in excel related to various employee benefit packages and compensation plans. A lot of my work was based on what my manager was working on, I also picked up a lot of work that a coworker on maternity leave had done in the past. Most of my work took the form of data based analysis in excel.
Did you have a mentor?
No
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Without a doubt! My understanding of employee benefits was incredibly helpful for my day to day, and my knowledge of risk management in general was very helpful for one of my main projects.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
The two main projects I was assigned was a risk assessment of Lincoln National Corporations various compensation packages and a regression analysis of the relationship between compensation level and sales incentive plans.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Internship lunches with a high level speaker series including the company's CFO. The intern pool was provided with a generous stipend to plan our own events, we did and escape the room+dinner in Philly, a Phillies game, and 2 group lunches toward the end of the internship.
Describe the company's internship program.
Atmosphere was very laid back and friendly, while the average age of the office skewed a little bit to the older side I never felt out of place. Work load was good, definitely slow at the beginning of the internship but I got more and more busy as it progressed.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
I would say so, nothing really surprised me about it.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
No scheduled time off but my manager was very accommodating.
