Actuarial Science
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I mostly worked on loss development triangles and making LDF selections and ultimate selections from the different reserving methods like paid, reported, paid BS, reported BS, frequency-severity, etc.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I had a transitional coach who was just 2 years older than me and helped me with all the questions I might have about the company, work, or their actuarial program.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
The actuarial science P&C capstone class helped me best for this internship.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
The hiring process was really simple with directly the on site interview after the career reception.
Were you assigned any special projects?
I was assigned a special (non-traditional) project which was loss reserving for loyalty rewards programs as opposed to the traditional loss reserving for insurance companies.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
People in the office took me out to lunch pretty often, the company takes everyone to Moshulu deck at Penn's Landing every summer to relax and meet other people at the firm, and finally they take all their interns to Florida for a week for training but they also took us to Universal Studios one of the days.
Describe the company's internship program.
They had a day of playing games and a days of community service on top of the one week in Florida and the Moshulu deck at Penn's Landing.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
The internship was just as I expected it to be except that it was too short. It was only an 8 week internship out of which we had training stuff to do for 2 weeks so I got to do the real actuarial work for only 6 weeks.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
We were allowed to take unpaid time off if we wanted to but we were also allowed to work extra on some days to make up for it if we wanted to take time off and still get paid for it. They also had jumpstart Fridays where we could leave work at 3pm instead of 5pm.

I assisted on a variety of projects. I utilized actuarial reserving methods and techniques to analyze adequacy of carried reserves. I mostly used Microsoft Excel and a company-specific actuarial modeling software. The dress code for the internship was business casual dress. On Fridays we were allowed to wear jeans. I usually worked 40 hours a week. During summer KPMG had JumpStart Fridays which means you can leave work 3 hours early providing that you had compensated for these hours earlier in the week.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes

My mentor was very helpful during my internship. She was always available to help me no with work related questions or just general ones.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
My AS and RMI 2101 classes helped me to have a necessary fundamental knowledge for my internship but I also had a lot on the job training that was essential to my work.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
After interviewing with KPMG at the Gamma intern reception, I was contacted to attend KPMG’s Inside Look Program that was 2 days long. On the first day, I’ve been given several presentations about KPMG and the internship, then I had a networking dinner where I got to meet my future managers and colleagues. The next day I had an on-site interview at Radnor. This process consisted of several interviews with different people. I was called few days after with an offer.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I had performed a complete reserve review for over 20 lines of business for 2015 to calculate trends and development that is used as primary benchmarks when analyzing client’s data.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
When we traveled to Orlando, all the traveling expenses (including meals, transportation, hotels) were covered by KPMG.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
KPMG has a formal training where the first few days all Philadelphia interns get familiar with KPMG’s policies, software, office practices, compliance regulations. Then we had a national training in Orlando, Florida for 1 week where we get to meet KPMG interns from all over US. In Orlando we were given a more technical training based on our practices. Overall, the atmosphere at work was fantastic. Everyone from a first year associate to a partner were willing to help and answer as many questions as possible.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
You were able to request a few days off but you just had to notify your manager at least a week in advance.
