Evan Burnell
Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
I trained alongside two new full time hires. Primary responsibilities were reviewing, rating and issuing renewals on Business Owners and Commercial Package Policies. 8:30-4:30 M-F with a 45 minute lunch.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I would sit down for an hour per week. Harford Mutual recently created a formal mentorship program and I was treated as a member in that. I also sat right across from my mentor and I could ask him questions as they came up. I feel this helped me understand underwriter-agent interaction better as he would show me specific examples of his work.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes I was not faced with anything far from what I was expecting and prepared for.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
They came to the career fair then i had a phone interview followed by an in person interview at TU.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I was responsible for the Business Owner and Package renewals.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
The company paid for me to live in an extended stay hotel for the summer and provided up to $25 per day for food. The company has season tickets for a minor league baseball team and gave me 4 tickets for a game.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
Very welcoming atmosphere. Formal training completed for "systems training" as well as formal training on how to handle the renewals. I was also included on monthly training sessions for younger employees and had shadow days with claims, a production underwriter and loss control. Remained busy as the workload was steady.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
N/A
If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
I was the only intern so it was kind of boring living in Maryland, but I would see friends on weekends. I did a lot of fishing to pass time.
