Risk Management                   Fall 2017
Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
My daily tasks revolved around which department I was with for that specific day/week. I got plenty of hands of experience since it was a smaller mutual insurance company. My main tasks/projects consisted of competitive price analysis for a new line of home owners insurance they were opening in PA. I also did plenty of UW tasks such as re-underwriting agents accounts if they were having to many losses, and would check the accounts and make sure they are insurable risks. All together they did an amazing job of giving me hands on work in each department that would help them achieve goals and treated me as an employee and not just an intern.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
Jim Reagan was my mentor. He is the manager of Product management. At the end of every day we would meet for 15-30 mintues to discuss what I did that day, and answer and questions I had. He as oversaw all the work I did all summer.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, RMI 3502 prepared me very well for the internship. All the industry terms and info we learned lead me to be able to jump right in and understand what I was doing.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
1st interview was at the intern reception. 2nd interview was about 2-3 weeks later at Temple. I then received my offer the next day. The second interview was the more in depth between the two. They asked questions such as: Why I was interested in insurance?; What I do to stay on top of the ever evolving insurance world, such as reading articles or being involved in groups like Gamma; Strengths/weakness; what makes me a good candidate; what I know about the company; etc.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I was assigned 2 major projects. One of which was assisting with the development of their Homeowners line they were opening in PA. I did price analysis, location research as to where to enter, identifying different risks involved in the state, and working on the documents that were sent to the DOI of PA and passed giving us permission to enter and do business there, etc. My second major task was coming up with a presentation on a big risk in PA, which is Fracking. I had time each week set aside for research and preparation for my presentation at the end of the summer.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
They took me out for a number of lunches throughout the summer.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The atmosphere is very friendly and felt like a family since the company is composed of 50+ full time employees that have been working together for most of their careers. Everyone was very friendly and helpful throughout the whole summer, and I was able to go to upper management including the VP and President at any time of the day to discuss anything insurance related that was on my mind. The first day was an informal orientation to discuss company policy, and then they really throw you right into the mix of things, but were extremely helpful and taught me a great deal throughout the process. The work load was high, but that is also because I worked with multiple departments and would ask for more then 1 task at the time so I always had work. I did not have to do work away from the office except for my preparation for an end of the internship research project on "Fracking" which was presented in a 45 minute presentation followed by a Q&A session in front of all managers of the company. It was all together a great experience with friendly and helpful employees.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
They let me take a week off for a family vacation, and added that week to the end so I still worked the 12 weeks. They are very employee friendly so if you had a legit reason or family obligation they would accept it for time off.
If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
I did not have to relocate but I did commute 50 miles each way. If you leave at the right time traffic was always at a minimum leaving the city, and coming back in. You need roughly an hour for the trip each way.

Actuarial Science               Spring 2017
Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
My day consisted mainly from work with excel. Couple times I had the opportunity to go out for a field trip with claims adjuster or a our marketing team, which was refreshing. They are pretty lenient about your arrival time to work, but it pretty much ranges from 7am-9am and then you work for 8 hours plus you are required to take a 30 minute lunch break.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My manager was my mentor and he was overseeing all the work that I was doing. I could approach him any time with any question that I had and he would take time to answer it. Moreover, he would come check on me couple times per day to see about my progress and if I needed help with anything. In addition, at the end of every other day we would have a meeting where we would further discuss my projects and assignments and we would talk about my progress.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, it allowed me to grasp the concepts at much higher speed and it is amazing to see how all this knowledge is being practically applied in the industry.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I had one on campus interview with the HR representative and then I had a phone call with my future manager.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Yes, I had a lot of individual projects. Most of my projects where related to the work in excel. One of the projects was to build a credit model that would allow us to make necessary factor adjustments to a new credit tiers that we were going to apply. This allowed me to learn a lot about use of excel (including Macros and use of VBA). Secondly, I had a individual research project that was related to my field of interest and I had the opportunity to present it to the company's management team.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
They have birthday celebrations where they provide food and also my managers took the other intern and I out for a lunch multiple times.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The atmosphere is very laid back in sense that you have time for you projects and you are not put under a time pressure. The office is very small so you get to know everyone and people there are extremely friendly and willing to help. I was never rejected by anyone when I came with a question and they always took as much time as I needed to understand a concept that I was asking about. It is a great place if you are looking for a good learning experience.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes, they were very open to this. Sometimes I would leave earlier on Friday, or I would not come to work because I had to take an exam, or I got sick and had to skip the whole week and they would be completely fine with it as long as I let them know in advance.
If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
The only disadvantage of this internship is that it is in a remote location and therefore you need to have a car or carpool in order to be able to get there. However, I was driving there daily from Philadelphia and it is a pretty short drive.
