Location

Please list your major(s) and minor(s).
RMI
Provide a general description of the work at your internship.
I primarily work on the cat modeling side. I help model the expected losses and risks through a cat modeling system. I also helped automate word documents and excel documents through coding tools like VBA, R studio and Sequel.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes
If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I had three. First, Maria, the VP of Property and Inland Marine, helped me understand the mechanisms of the industry and company. Rashad, the modeling team manager, helped me to grasp coding very throughly. Lastly, Amy, a modeler, helped me understand all the software and let me shadow her for a week.
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Very much
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I did a phone interview with Maria which was very intimidating. She asked a lot of insurance related questions especially when she knows you have an understanding of insurance. I later realized she is a very serious person who wants committed and hard working employees.
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
One project included a fuzzy look up algorithm that search addresses keyword. After, it used this information to deleted unnecessary words. Through R Studio code, I also simplified policy forms by autofilling word documents with information from sequel based on policy id numbers. I also attended most meetings and helped create spreadsheets and charts for the VP of Property and Inland Marine.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay?
Internship Lunches, Summer outings and happy hours, community service
Describe the company's internship program.
Excellent culture with great people who always want to help you succeed. A lot of humorous people in the office who like to hang out. Even the people with families came out to some gatherings and were all extremely kind and welcoming.
Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
It was better then expected especially since I got to explore a new city.
Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes 2 sick days and 2 vacation days. Also 4th of July off.

Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
I worked on Price Monitoring Analysis. I used and Excel and PowerPoint to find percentiles and weighted averages for renewal premiums across several months/years. I created a presentation, to be used by VPs and the president of the company. I did some administrative work for other actuaries and worked with loss data ratios/factors.
Did you have a mentor?
No
Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I needed a good amount of Excel knowledge which I had because of class projects and the Excel Business class.
Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
There was an online application. Interview was a 10 minute phone call conversation. (Interview was not through Gamma).
Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Price Monitor Analysis - I created a file that could automatically refresh as new data becomes available. Data came from a database which included policy numbers, line of business, start date and expiration date, premium, renewal premium, industry price change (%), and target price change. I created a visual presentation to show the analysis.
What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Sporting Events, Lunches, and presentations by company executives.
Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
Fairly new, the company never hired interns before (it was more of a family summer job opportunity in previous years), no strict structure, there was no plan for every week. Projects just came up, and we were handed some instruction.
